Get a copy of this book it's all you need best 25.00 you will ever spend
I need to buy the updated version. The author Bill was a national record holder with Olds power. He recommended's huge clearance's compared to most of the other experts but mentions good machine work is most important.

A few months ago I picked up some 307 headers from a member on here. Will they work with the 455? I really only bought them to do the exhaust with the 307 and not have to re do it again to go true dual when the time for an engine swap came. the headers are hedman 58070

You will thank me! Unless you are going to live on the drag strip, these are all you need. It is the monstrous torque these 455s produce that makes them so worth while. I put these on my '87 442 big block I built and I have NO regrets. Run a true dual 2 1/2" exhaust to the rear end and you are good.

I don't understand. why the manifolds? Seems like for that price I could pick up some cheap new headers or decent old headers. Summit says my headers will work for 260-403. Will those headers not work with a 455

First, your 8.5 is a good rear end, posi would be better, Pro-tract bolt in posi unit are okay. They do clunk a lot going around corners, but hold up well. Second, the stock oiling system is fine, as long as you DO NOT put a high volume pump with the stock 4 quart oil pan. Always use a large Wicks/NAPA large filter. Check oil regularly and keep it filled. Bill Travado likes lots of clearance because he builds race engines not basically stock street engines. Your not building a National Record Holder here. I've never seen a 455 street driven Olds have a connecting rod failure, a bearing yes but usually there was a reason for it. There is absolutely no reason to that stock small valved headed 455 over 5000 rpms, your power is declining after probably 4800 rpms. I like the Toro pans, even better with the front and rear windage trays. A great system no matter what some olds guru's say. The extra quart is a 20 percent more oil. The Oldsmobile Engineers were smart. Don't over cam or carburetor, Keep It Simple-Smart. Jmo

I meant to say, don't TAKE is over 5000 rpms. Yes there will be times you will have to such as if you shift at 5000 rpms with the 3.73s you'll be 5400/5600 rpms in the traps, no problem the rods can handle it. I've found my steet 455 best times are shifting at 4800 rpms. Jmo
