Changing the original 307 to a 71 Olds 350. The 307 starter only has 1 small wire post, (no markings) where the 350 starter has 2 small posts (1 marked S) (1 marked R) I know where the large battery cable goes, but my wiring harness only has wire for 1 post. what do I need here. The starter was from a 69 98 Olds 455. Don't think it matters but since the 350 has higher compression (10.5-1) thought this starter would be better than the 307 starter.

Hook the purple wire to S (start). The R post was used on cars with points distributors to give full voltage to the coil during cranking to aid in quicker starts.

As said above. That is a good starter to use, the 307 starter would barely turn over my low compression 403. I assume the 350 was rebuilt? The factory compression was 8 to 1.

Yes it was rebuilt and has only been fired a few times, but has now sat for a few years without being ran, has forged flat top pistons. it starts and turns off as soon as you let go of the key.

update and correction from previous post, it starts but wont idle, if you leave it go below 2000 it shuts off. I have not tried to jump the connector under the dash (A-B) I think. Got tired and needed time to think so we stopped for today. We do still have the computer hooked up, and using the original distributor and carb. The 307 ran fine with this carb, as it was rebuilt last fall. Don't have any check engine lights, Is it possible this carb is just not enough for a 350? I think it should be, as all we are trying to do right now is get it to idle. Any ideas, all are welcome right now as I'm tired and out of my own ideas at this point.

Remember that 307 has a whopping 7.9 to 1 compression. How big is the cam in the 350?

if it was a ccc setup you need to ground the aldl a and b terminals or disconnect the plug which i just dont like doing.get it in diagnostic mode and set to 20 btdc unless its computerless then in which case so whatever.also might be your computer, ive read the non h.o. computers just had a hell of a time compensating for the larger displacement.if you can find a compuer from a 84 to 87 cutlass 442 might run a ton better...oh duh this is an 87 442 so no issues there

double post sorry but seperate thoughts, might also need to readjust the mc solenoid alittle richer by turning it out just a tad,if you have a dwell meter this is accomplished easy just look for a duty cycle of about 35 on the v6 scale.being as the engine wants to idle so high otherwise stalls out might look at the throttle shaft for vac leaks,if it wiggles a bunch you need to either get a bushing kit or some plasticish teflon sheet stuff i have for creating bushings to seal off any vac leaks at the shafts.i dont remember the website but there is a very informative article on it if you google dyi quadrajet throttle shaft bushings.secondly is it idling so high after initial startup?might be choke housing is to tight or something is binding on the fast idle linkage.also drill out the idle screw passages to closer .060 to .070 to get more fuel into the carb and makes tuning alot easier as well as not having to turn out the needles quite as much though in doing so you need to snip about one coil off the idle needle springs so they can seat fully.long *ss story short though i suspect a vacuum leak somewhere

I agree with the vacuum leak idea, just have to find it now. The cam specs, I remember it being an Edelbrock Performer cam. I don't really remember the specs on it, I've had this engine complete for quite a while (late 90's) sitting in a 71 Cutlass S project that I think I'm going to get rid of so we are using the engine in the 442.

Your swirl port timing curve will be a problem if that is the 204/214 cam. I ran it with 9.5 to 1 and had pinging.
