Timing on 1972 350 Olds ?

So i bought the powermaster starter 9510 did not work....... It did not catch my flywheel. The engine is a 350 olds it came off of a buick rivera front wheel drive 1979. Im lost and dont know wat to do next. I droped this engine in my 78 cutlass because its bored over 30. Nice solid block i rebuilt it and now i cant get it started. Would you guys know someone i can call or wat actual starter will work.?

You need to change the flywheel, you need the flywheel off your 260. The FWD Rivera and Tornado use a transaxle mounted starter and smaller flywheel.

So i changed my fly wheel starter ingages but wont disingage it stays stuck on my fly wheel i added 2 shims but still stays stuck. What can be the problem now?

get your car up pn jack stands with a safe distance to see exactly whats going on,will be loud but should answer wither or not you need to get a shorter pinion gear.i bet its too long and if you ground alittle off the end it would disengage

also curious i may have asked before im alittle tipsy from a night out lol.anyway do olds engines like alot or alittle mechanical advance?not to hijack the tread but right now i was mine set up with weights and a centerplate that give me 24 degrees mechanical advance but i also have weights and centerplates at my disposal to bring it down as low as i wanna say 15 or 16 possibly less.i know all in it wants about 36 at about 3000 rpm and with vac advance im dead on at 51 degrees with a non egr edelbrock rpm intake which ive read is acceptible for non egr application.again sorry to hijack but since it was a timing thread why not i suppose..btw engine is a 67 olds 330 with new head gaskets so probabably down to about 10 to 9.5 ish compression

Olds like a lot of advance, problem is 51 is a lot for even 9.5 to 1 but if it isn't pinging, run it. Ideally around 20 base with 18 to 20 mechanical on the street with some vacuum advance, a lot if low compression.

As far as the starter, make sure it is wired properly. Maybe the ignition is sticking or the solenoid isn't releasing.

in your opinion what should a no egr'ed engine run at with vac advance?i thought 51 was on the conservative side but can certainly lower it if its gonna hurt my engine.as for the starter it could be not disengaging but i still bet its just too long of a pinion,i mention this because there was a friend i had who also had a friend who had the starter where it wouldnt disengage.i got under it to watch the motion of the pinion gear and sure enough it was just slightly too long and was catching on about...1/16th too far inward not away or so give or take so we just took the starter apart and ground that amount off the pinion gear and no more catching,engaged properly and disengaged when the key was released but the only way to really know is to crawl under there and see what its actually doing,why its catching.theoretically its a very simple circuit with not much of a variance for working or not working so a solenoid sticking in the out position and not retracting is attribute personally to mechanical clearances and not so much to electronic mishap

If there is no pinging, leave it. Olds V8's love timing, higher compression and a small cam make it more difficult.
