I'm new here, but have a question about my monte carlo project.
I'm buying a 1985 305 high output with a 700r4. I also already have a turbo 350 with a shift kit. The car has 3.73 gears. I plan to do 4 barrel intake, carb, cam, headers, double roller timing chain or noisy timing gears, and maybe a few other things. So which would work better with my setup, a stock 700r4 or a turbo 350 with a shift kit?

With 3.73 gears, 700R4 or 2004R all the way.

Is there any electrical wiring with the 700r4? And also, I know the 700r4 has a TV cable, how difficult is that to adjust right?

Super easy with the right bracket. I replaced the TH350 in my '72 Chevelle with a 700R4 and it was a pretty easy swap. I had to shorten the driveshaft 3", but the trans was set to lock up when shifted into 4th and the TV cable hook up all fell right into place.

What trans does the car currently have? If it has a 700R4, swapping to a TH350 isn't worth the hassle unless you are cheap and are building a drag only car you trailer to the track.

If it has a TH350, swapping in a 2004R might be a better swap than a 700R4. A 2004R shouldn't need the driveshaft shortened.

A straight up full race 305 won't hurt either a properly put together 700R4 or 2004R, unless its turbo'd or spraying a 150 shot.

It's a roller right now. Where can I get one of the brackets your taking about at?

Summit, the junkyard. I modded the kickdown linkage on my Chevelle to be a TV bracket. TV adjustment is critical, but its not hard.

If it's a roller, does it have a driveshaft you are going to use?

Ok, the main reason I was kind of going away from doing the 700r4 was because I thought it would be hard to do lol.
I have a driveshaft but it will probably need shortened for the 700r4

And also, the 305 isn't a junk engine, correct? A lot of people tell me it's a terrible engine and that I should ditch it. But I think it is a great engine. What do you think about the 305?

A 200r4 would be the better option if you don't want to shorten the DS and have it rebalanced. It also saps less power than a 700r4. A 700r5 has a 3.06 first gear and a 1.62 2nd whereas the 200r4 has a 2.74 1st and a 1.57 2nd. With the 200r4 there won't be as much of a drop off from 1-2. Both use a TV cable, and both need the converter lockup feature.

It's an okay engine. But if you want more than 350hp, ditch it. They weren't designed for power. Just economy, which they didn't even do that well.
