of all the roadrunners that out out there, hemi's or otherwise none of them is faster than this roadrunner..
The DOHC race 455 made over 700 hp on the Lansing dyno. Olds Hemi made 650 HP, 4 valves per cylinder. With 8 to 1 and a .400" lift cam, still made 400 HP. They had push rod issues, by the time it was ready, the insurance and emissions were tightening plus Chevy threw a tantrum just like they did for the F-88, Olds much better Corvette.
The Hp race back then was much like today. The '71 Mustang was designed for a 500+ cube Boss Motor, The whole big 3 was shooting for a 500+ HP street motor, then reality set in.
Pure stock racing rules - google ( Rules - Pure Stock is the Way to Rock ! - Pure Stock Drags ) It is very strict rules, take a look at each of the categories.
No way is the 442's front swaybar hooked up and functional and/or those stock front shocks as required by the rules. Stock front ends don't go up and stay up for the entire 1/4 mile.
Strict rules were made to be broken.
I never saw a stock GN run in the 12's. Back in 1987 my brother in law bought a 1986 GN. We took it to Lapeer drag way here in Michigan. He also read all of the hype about how fast a "stock GN " was supposed to be and thought he was going to blow my doors off with his "12 second" GN. He ran a bunch of 14:60's and a few 14:50's and was very disappointed. It was a completely stock 10,000 mile car. We had some stock GN's run low 14's. Most stock cars are not fast as people think. The stock muscle drags are some of the most finely and highly tuned and blue printed vehicles around. It is truly impressive to watch them run.
