So I've had the pleasure of running across 2 aluminum core supports. I never noticed on the first but certainly on this second one how large the plug welds are...

This one also did not have the letter A stamped on it like the first...which I understand is possible...

I still can't believe the weight difference between the steel and aluminum. I can see how they'd help lighten up the front end.

OK, now those are dumb. The diameter should be significantly, visually larger than the steel ones to work like the steel ones.

AL has less than 1/3 the tensile strength of steel. Aluminum parts only work to replace steel parts when the X-section is enlarged.

I should add that these were both sold and that I was posting more for an FYI sort of thing. However I'm of course always looking for them.

That's why I always snicker when people say you need to take a magnet with you when looking for one....you really can't miss them...the plug welds are huge, and they won't have that lovely shade of brown rust.

I have had the fortune to have found 6 (5 usable, sadly one was U shaped where the Century had embraced a utility pole) of these, they all had the horrible plug welds, some have had the large A on them, the last one also had As on the headlamp baffles

FWIW, I have found them in Buick Century, Pontiac Grand Prix, and an early Regal. Have never seen one in an Olds, nor have I ever found one in a car newer than 1980 model year.

GM listed them as crash parts for the later cars, but again, I've never seen one in that application. Of course, they were never used in Chevrolets as OE equipment

I agree Brian...you really can't miss them if you know what you're looking for and that's kinda why I thought I'd post up.

Both of these were pulled from Pontiac's...one was a 79 Grand Prix, the second was pulled from the 78 Grand Am that I found earlier this year.

The aluminum x braces are a new one to me, I don't believe any of the ones I ran across had them
