Donovan, thanks for your typically detailed explanation for the beast under the hood in response to my "simple" question. Have you run it yet? Was it in the car when you went to Starbuck's, no, wait, Dunkin' Donuts, no, wait, what's the coffee place you Canucks :) like, many pages ago. Now, of course, you're gunna grenade both your transmission and rear end the first time you put your boot in it (which will go first?). Or do you have surprises in those categories there, too? I'm not worried, I'm sure your meticulous planning and execution will reveal itself with optimized solutions down the road. Well done, my friend!

BTW, If "Canuck" is considered pejorative when used by others, lemme know and I'll edit this right away. I don't get out much.

I am more offended that I had to look up the meaning of "pejorative". Damn Yanks with their big words... ;)

I literally just came here to compliment your Halloween spirit (putting Skull in the title), but I'm leaving slightly inspired to patch something metallic (despite me not knowing much about welding). lol
I dunno if "recently 27" counts as "a young member," but R.I.P. to Bob Falfa's bitchin' '55 Chevy. You totally had that Milner fella...

Made a little more headway tonight...

Got the second (and last) old rusty marker light opening cut out of the passenger’s side quarter panel...

Then after trimming down my previously made replacement patch and aligning it, started tacking it in:

The finished product:

Not bad for a single night’s work me thinks!

On a goofier note, I love Halloween time. You can find things you simply can’t find other times of the year. Over the weekend, I picked up this little guy...

View attachment 75967

He’s plastic, about 4” high, and cost a whopping $3.

Why you ask? Well, because if it was good enough for Bob Falfa and his bitchin’ ‘55 Chevy, it’s good enough for me! (Pic included for reference, check out the rear view mirror)

And for our younger members, seriously?Google that sh*t!

Our friend and fellow member Scott (InjectedCutty) has already graciously crowned him with his name...

Meet “Olds Skull”

Thanks for having a lil fun with me everyone! Till next time.

Earlier this week while continuing to work on the quarter panels, I decided to pull the quarter panel extensions and taillights to access some rusty (but not terrible) areas that I couldn’t otherwise get to.

After seeing a few of these areas that need attention, I’ve decided to just go the extra mile and strip the whole back panel and trunk gutters down to bare metal and repaint them. Kinda sucks, but better to do it now, and it’ll be worth it to know I have adequate coverage and protection in the long run.

After the extensions and lights were out, access was still a bit limited so I decided to pull the back bumper as well:

And this is where things got interesting.

Those of us that are veteran G body owners (this is my 4th) know all too well the design flaw from GM that causes the rear frame rails to rust out. The rear rails on Olds Cool are solid and intact, but I still fully expected to get SOME crap from outta the inside of them after getting the bumper off.

What I wasn’t prepared for however, was this:

Before these pictures were taken, the floor was freshly swept so I could roll around on the creeper to pull the bumper bolts. All this crap came from ONLY the rear frame rails, from about the back of the tire to the bumper.

While it does look bad in the pics, they don’t really do it justice as to just HOW MUCH came outta there. So with that in mind, and to satisfy my own personal curiosity I decided to sweep it all up and bag it so that I could weigh it.
The results surprised even me...

Yep, you’re reading that right. 12 lbs!!!
Once I had the bumper off, the insides of the rails were packed solid. I had to use a really long pry bar and a flashlight to break it all up and work it out towards the body mount holes. It appeared to be mostly fine dust, dirt and small stones, leading me to wonder if at least one of the previous owners didn’t travel a lot of gravel roads.

I guess there’s two ways of looking at it, either the car will get less traction now with all that ballast gone, or it’ll get faster now that it’s lighter!

Anyways, the car is back down on all fours again. I’ve gotta get the winter tires put on the gf’s car today, so it’s gotta be moveable.

I’ll probably grab a few more pics once it’s outside, as it hasn’t seen the light of day much this year. If I do, I’ll post ‘em up here later today.

Cheers,
D.

Well sh*t!

If that’s all it takes...
I’ll drill a bunch of speed holes in the frame, eliminate the bumper reinforcements, and leave the interior gutted. I’ve already got a K&N filter, get me some of them “Type S” and HondaSpeed decals, and I should be in the 9’s by the end of the day!

Yep, good eye Darin.
It came out with all the rest of the crap in the driver’s side frame rail. It’s from the second to last position from the bumper. The other 3 appear to be holding for now, so I don’t think I’ll kick that particular hornets nest just yet...

They’ll have to be replaced at some point eventually, but I’m not prepared to do that just yet. On the plus side, I have a complete set of OEM body bushings with only about 6 years on them left over from when I upgraded the ones on The Juggernaut to polyurethane.
