Dumb question: Did your pan get dented in by the jack during installation? If the clearance between the pan and filter got squeezed down, it could just not be getting enough fluid into the pump to let the pump run to its full potential. That would explain the sluggish everything, all at once.
... maybe. There is a lil dent in the back of the pan towards the edge, not in the middle. When I drop the pan I was planning on beating it back out.

That still wouldn't explain why it was working last week but not now though as that dent has been there.

It would probably be noticeable if it was bad enough to restrict flow. I have seen this happen when dumb people put a 2 ton floor jack right in the middle of the pan with no support and jack away.

The only time a jack was near the underside was before the car was first started. The trans worked after that, but not now. I'm less mad that it stopped working, I just want to know why.

Sorry to hear this. As said drop the pan and see what's what. I am getting tired of the failing and leaking TH350's and 2004R's. I am stepping to a TH400 or TH4L80E eventually.

Since nobody has attempted to interpret the title... mother f er ? I would drop the pan, swap the filter, then put the same fluid back in with some lucas. As long as there are no catastrophic clues with the pan off.

This converter hasn't been cut, and seems to be a stock piece. This was behind a Buick 50, and now another Buick 350, both under my ownership. And a finger width is a bit of an exaggeration. It was a 1/4 inch or thereabout.

timo22 made a good point, you need to measure the gap, it should be 3/16". If you have too much gap then it will not seat into the pump properly and damage the pump. Since you have no idea why it crapped out I don't know why you don't check the gap like timo suggested

After I had a massive leak when I just pulled the converter foward, I always shim the converter with washers. As said it guranteed the coverter is seated properly on the pump.

The seals have probably hardened in the trans and you are just as likely yo have the same problem with another 30 year old trans, the parts to rebuild one are only a couple hundred bucks at the most.
