I would source another transmission be it a 350 or 400 to build while you get the last bit of life out of this one. They are cheap to buy and cheap to build. I have no idea where you got $700 like one of your older comments said. My 400 was around $300 for the rebuild kit plus converter and deep pan. Both are a dime a dozen. You can put as many $150 transmissions in there as you want but all that's gonna do is guarantee that you will be swapping it out sooner than later.
This one is toast. I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and grab one to put in place of it, then either rebuild this one, or the other one (first one that died last year, slipped to death). This one is on borrowed time already, spontaneously. It still perplexes me how one day it was fine, the next it was sh*t. Oh well. It can't really be helped. It's old. I'm gonna have to stick with a Th350. A Th400 requires a cross member, shortened DS, and other mods I don't care to do. Hopefully this one will last long enough for me to afford to rebuild one of my own. Rebuilt Th350 with a 2000-2200 converter and my trans go 350-1-2 kit I have lyin around will do nicely me thinks. Especially once I get that GN rear end in there.

You must like changing transmissions. Personally, I'm not a fan.
Why not just build one, and throw it in instead of driving around on another hopefully good used unit while you build one?

All kidding aside, I'm bummed that as soon as you got the new engine in the second trans gave up the ghost.

If the transmission is not slipping and the fluid is not burnt I doubt the clutches are slipping. From the sounds of what yer describing, it being sluggish pulling away and at low speeds would lead me to believe the one way stator clutch is not holding. When this happens the stator turns in both directions resulting in no torque multiplication at low speeds. If it were seized yer problem would be no high speed torque multiplication.

To ease your pain a bit, my Cutlass ate at least 5 TH350s before it got to the one that's in it now, which has billet and forged internals.

I've heard of TH350's just up and dying for no apparent reason many times. It sucks and it's really frustrating but what can you do?

When I bought my truck someone had put a TH350 in place of the 700R4. It test drove fine and worked like it should till I payed the guy and left. On the way home, drive started going out. It would come and go. It would work for a while and then it was like you shifted into neutral. It managed to hold together for the 3 hour drive home but it only lasted a few days past that. I know it's not the same thing that you're having a problem with but it just shows that you never know when it's gonna go out.

Building a good solid transmission would be your best bet and would likely keep you mobile for a while. Personally, I'm about done with TH350's. 3 gears just isn't enough. My Monte Carlo and my truck both have TH350's. The Monte is geared high enough that I can drive it on the interstate but I don't try to go much faster than 70mph because the revs start climbing more than I like. The truck has 3.42's. I rarely drive it on the interstate. Overdrive automatics or 5 or 6 speed manuals are the way to go in my opinion. I plan to put a T56 in the Monte someday. If for some reason that doesn't happen, a built 200-4R would be my other choice. I know you said money was an issue right now so I don't expect you to switch to a different transmission now but it's definitely something to think about in the future.

At that point, it's not worth it to me. It sounds contradictory to what I said earlier, but if I have to dive into the transmission to get it running, I'd rather just buy another one. I mean sure, if this was a spare transmission I would, but in the guise of getting my car mobile (again), I'd rather dump it.

and buy another unknown transmission?? If you are going to beat on it buy 2 so you have spare if you are not interested in building one to take the punishment

I can't believe a thread that is essentially about replacing a transmission filter has gone 12 pages.
