Great article I was at a Buick event 5 years ago in Ohio at a race track and they had some of the guys who were involved on the project of the GNX they had the 86 prototype there and Xray. They also had the guy who did the movie Black Air there I wished I would of video taped it the seminar the guys had some video clips of how stuff was going together on the car and had some prototype parts they passed around. It was cool to hear there story and there love for GNX the grand national to end all grand nationals.

Thanks for posting. That was a good article. Best part was the few discussions after the article. Of course someone owned one, drove it and sold it, knew someone who had one, etc. Most likely they are getting Grand Nationals and the GNX cars confused? You never know?
I think I saw one at a car show once but never on the road. Even back then I would probably have seen Bigfoot before a GNX! lol
You know how great a car is when you read about the GNX back stories and I would have loved to have seen that high speed escort with the troopers. That had to be a fun testing road trip.

"We also had a fun development drive out west. We took off from Phoenix in three Grand Nationals and the two prototype GNXs. We were pushing hard going north toward the Grand Canyon, full-out all the way up through Nevada, where some local cops escorted us at high speeds. We spent the night in Vegas, then headed across to Santa Maria, California, and stopped at Death Valley."

I think I have a magazine article written by someone who went on this trip.

When I was a Junior/Senior in high school, a friend of mine's dad had a GNX. I wish I had pics or could remember what number it was. I remember the numbered plaque on the glove box door. This was back in about 1993. To be honest, I really didn't understand or appreciate what it was or how rare it was at the time. I don't understand why. I loved G bodys then, but to be honest had a bit of a negative attitude towards V-6's. I had ridden in a regular GN (not sure what year) and was impressed with it. I remember the boost gauge was a row of green, then yellow, then red LED'S. I liked the GN, but I liked the 79 T-type that had been swapped to a 455 better. It was brown and I think it had a brown Landau top. All three cars were owned by the same family.

The GNX sat in its own garage and the way I remember, was only taken out to go to the Autorama. I really liked all three cars but at the time I really wanted an 83 H/O or a Monte SS.
