Good news all around on the last of the metal work front tonight.
:)

While it kicked my *ss a bit, the last of the welding on the small patch got completed. The part I had the difficulty with was the overhead welding on the underside of the pinch weld. Not because it was overhead (which is almost always difficult anyways), but because of the giant glob of seam sealer in behind and in the most inaccessible spot. Every time I struck the arc, the sealer would melt and run into my weld puddle contaminating it.
Have I mentioned lately my dislike and disgust with the factory’s over use and abuse of the stuff?
But anyways, I persevered and overcame it. Here’s a look at it now that it’s finished, also note that I got the ugliness of the shrink (shrunk?) area profiled and taken care of.

When that was done, I ran a tape line along the bottom of the pinch weld, and trimmed off the excess like I did on the other side. Looks much better now.

Happy that everything from the wheel opening back was finished and taken care of, I turned my attention to something I’ve been kind of dreading and therefore procrastinating on:
Removing the rocker panel moulding on this side.
If you might recall, when I removed the same moulding from the other side, I found an ugly little surprise waiting for me underneath, a nasty rust hole. Fearing I’d find a similar issue lurking beneath this one, I’ve left it till the last moment.

Well, tonight was the moment of truth. After pulling it off, I was pleasantly surprised (and very relieved) to find no holes! Just a little surface stuff that needed to be taken care of. Here’s what I found after removing the moulding:

While the rust on the right in the pic looks pretty grim, it really wasn’t that bad. I stripped the last of the old paint and primer off with 80 grit on the DA, then knocked the majority of the rust off/out with the Clean n Strip wheel. That left just a few deeper pits, and the screw hole that holds the end of the trim on.

I quickly buzzed up the screw hole (I can always add it back in later if need be), then ground it flush and tackled the last of the rust pits with a 36 grit disc on my angle die grinder. They all came out quite nicely without digging too deep into the surface.

Here’s the exact same panel after the work was completed:

All that’s left to do here is clean up the underside of the pinch weld in this area, but that can be done at anytime. At least this way, the surfaces of both full quarters are ready for filler and blocking work to start when Mike comes over on Sunday.
So that’s it! The last of the metal work on the back half of the car is finished! That’s a great feeling, and I’m extremely happy with that fact.

That’s it for now guys, thanks for checking back in regularly. As always, drive angry my friends!

D.

That's great Donovan! Good to hear/see that there were no ugly surprises under that trim. I bet it feels great to be past that hurdle of the project.

Do you have new doors? That edge on the right of the last photo could be a challenge.

I saw that too Quinn....but decided not to bring that up at this time.....

No worries guys. I purposely haven’t mentioned anything about the doors yet largely because it’s all still a bit up in the air. To be sure, the doors that are currently on the car are a lost cause. While the outsides look ok, the lower insides are pretty far gone. The rust damage there is pretty extensive. Could I fix them? Probably. Is it worth it? Not really, especially if I can find a better set to start with.

I do have the driver’s door still left over from The Brown Bomber that’s doing nothing but collecting dust, but I need to give it a really good evaluation to see if it would be a suitable replacement. Since up until lately that’s been a ways off in the future, I haven’t done that yet.

As for the passenger’s side door, I need to locate one. There’s a guy I found about 3 hours north of me that’s advertising that he has a bunch of G body Cutlass doors, fenders and bumpers that I intend to contact. By the looks of the pics he’s listed on Kijiji, he likely has a ‘78-‘80 door that would work.

If absolutely everything else fails, I’ll just sand and paint the existing door and leave it as is until I find something better. Obviously that’s not the way I’d prefer to do things, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Hopefully this all makes sense...

Did not mean to pop your balloon. You were doing so well......
There was a whole 78 Cutlass that a guy was parting out locally last year....I'll keep an eye out. We'll find someone heading north if I do find a do(n)or.

That makes sense....I kinda figured this would come up in due time...lol

Donovan if you have trouble locating good door/s, and hopefully that guy more local to you has some, I have access to a 78 that I can check on. It also has a nice front bumper (I remember we talked about the one on that green one I had hoped to get). Buying local is always better of course but if not give me a holler...

Another real quick update:

Santa came again today for Olds Cool in the form of some more parts via forum members.

View attachment 78532

A right hand taillight to replace one of the ones on the car.
This was sent to me free of charge from dr78442 when he read on the thread here that both of the taillight lenses I currently have on the car are cracked. He wouldn’t accept anything for it, simply because one mounting tab was broken, just to cover the cost of shipping. That’s going over and above IMO. Thanks Mike, your kindness and generosity is without equal.

And another set of hardtop filler panel clips from a gentleman in Las Vegas. I was put into contact with him via another member here, thanks Victor! Very much appreciated man!

That’s it for now, should be ready for another update after this Sunday.
:)

Till then,

It should be us thanking you for taking the time for all the work and time you take in posting all your updates! Being a miniscule part of your thread is an honor my friend!
