Okay no pics on hand but I pulled an insert out and took a pic. As luck would have it this one has both types...upper held on with the spring steel clips (2 in the center) the rest held on by the plastic tabs...

One upper clip missing on this one...

and the one end...

on the left hand side the vent bezel housing has raised tabs that hold that side in...

Hope this helps.
one more quick question, will the 1988 vent bezel fit in my 83? it looks a little different to me, as far as the profile and fit...

Interesting I have to admit I've never tried it that way....may have to on the next one. I find that the barbs on the clips don't let it turn all that well in the panel...but I'll certainly try on the next one I pull. I've found the clips run vertical and the slots in the dash run horizontal..so a quarter turn or so should about do it.

Does anyone have a part number etc. for those clips?

Permanent Temporary
Probably not available. You could fab some out of strip metal with needle-nose pliers if you have a clip to model from.

My 81 coupe has the panel with 2 metal clips as well, and pretty sure it's the original. The 82 I took apart also used them, and my 83 wagon did as well. Maybe it was a plant thing..,. I think they were all Arlington cars. I've never seen one that didn't have them, but I haven't had over a half-dozen apart
