I have roughly 450 into the 8.8 in my car. They have pushed Gbody stuff well into the 9 second range with stock internals. Way cheaper than the options from big companies.

Understood, but you're running Mustang wheels. I know that's not what I want; how much more is it to change axles, etc. to make GM wheels fit? How did you do the driveshaft; is that in the 450?

It would be nice if someone did a how-to, and it was made a stickie...

It is a lot of money and it puts my 357HP crate motor delayed even longer. I want to do it right the first time as I am too broke to do again. I like "Cool" on a ride so it is a tough decision. Like I say I don't rag my stuff....but...there are occasions when...I lapse into....when a true friend is sitting next to you in jail saying "Damn that was fun"

Quite honestly your 7.5 will handle that power especially if your not drag racing or running slicks. I ran my 7.5 (auburn posi) for three years @ at the track w/ slicks @ 12.3 (350 RWHP) with no problems. You might want to chat with 565, he had one behind his beast for a while.

You don't have to crazy spending money on a nine inch. I bought an axle - housing package from moser, it was $600 years ago but I think they are still just over $700, and ordered it with gm ends to accept my brakes and of course the axles drilled for GM wheels. You can find, build, or buy a third member pretty cheap.

Moser will make them with 5x4.75 if you were wanting new axles. The cheap way is to drill a Chevy pattern opposite the existing one.

My car runs a 4l80e so had to have a custom driveshaft made. Changing to a 9" or S60 will result in the same issues so I don't think there's a way around that part.

Like I said earlier I am out of my range of expertise. I have replaced a lot of bearings in rear ends, setting pre-loads and such. I want a nice posi/limited slip *ss end that is fun to drive. With an El C there is no weight on rear end and I have had my hot rods. I am not familiar with the auburn posi and will look into. I have BFG 60 series tires.
Thanks for input

I had my Moser axle shafts drilled for 5x4-3/4 and 5x4-1/2. The Wilwood spindles in the UMI C5/C6 brake kit also has a duel pattern drilled. Gonna make rim shopping a million times easier. A nice feature of a custom axle.

When I swap to a ford 9 inch in my Malibu I probably spent 1500 or less due to buying used ls1 rear disc brake setup from a salvage yard. Then new Moser 31 spline axles and nascar take out third member with all billet parts.then the housing was fab up with from a local guy that builds rear ends. if your making less than 500 horsepower I would just use the 7.5 rear end and be fine then put the extra money you saved to the rest of the car.

I know everyone's going to say I should get 3.73s or 4.10s, but doing the math, I think I want to get a 3.00 or 3.08. Reason being is I want a mellow highway ride, and decent MPG. With the gearing of the 4L60/4L70, that would mean I'm only turning about 2,000 RPM at 70 mph.

I used to think that, too. When I was searching for an 8.8 axle to swap into my GP, I specifically wanted one with a 3.08 ratio for that same reason. With my 26.1" tires and the (admittedly shallow) .75 overdrive in my 4L80E, I thought it would be ideal to rev at 2080 rpm while cruising at 70 MPH. But when I actually started driving the car--at that speed on the highway and also around town--I soon decided that perhaps I could go a bit shorter with my axle ratio and be even happier. ;)

Later, I did an upgrade "package" and installed new Strange axles plus c-clip eliminators and a TrueTrac differential. While it was apart, I found a local guy selling a take-out 3.55 ring & pinion set for dirt cheap, so I threw that in at the same time. Wow, what a difference! I did lose 2 mpg, yes, but I'm sure a lot of that is because I now drive the car harder than before... because it's a lot more fun! I rev at 2400 rpm at 70 MPH now, but I'll never go back.

I have roughly 450 into the 8.8 in my car.
Way cheaper than the options from big companies.

Which is why I went with the Ford 8.8 axle. If you don't have a G-body 8.5 lying around, it's a great value.
