I have seen the New Process A-883 overdrive 4 speed manual transmission mentioned quite a few times here and I was wondering how strong it is. I know they used the GM version in various light duty vans and trucks in the '80's but the biggest motor would have been maybe the 305. My cousin in Pittsburgh is a Mopar maniac and he says it is junk. He says even though they used the Mopar version behind the Hemi in the '60's it was problematic. He said he would not use it on anything bigger than a 360. He further says the GM version is worse than the Mopar version. The reason I ask is I have a friend with a Pontiac 400 in a '77 Trans Am and he wants an overdrive manual transmission. I thought this trans would be a good way to go until I spoke to my cousin. Is he right or an is he an idiot?

I'll be that guy. (Been drinking on Sunday. Most days. Anyway)

Any and most all overdrives will suck for a true performance car that are used and abused. They are at best a compromise if you don't beat them like a red headed stepchild(or any other stepchild) and drive your car with normal horsepower, not banging redline every time, every day, all day.

I was also wondering, I drove a 85 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 6.2L diesel as a work truck pretty sure that was the SM465. First is very low, I was also considering one for my 70S with the 2.78 gears. Supposedly the non OD version is stronger but who knows, the internet isn't the Gospel.

Well I can agree with that. If you try hard enough you can break anything. I had a Pontiac 400 in my old Malibu wagon. It had a Saginaw 4 speed and a 7.5" rear, both scorned as "weak". It lived 10 years and I was NOT easy on it. But I did not torture it. But having watched my friend drive the TA I feel he would over do it.

I've met more people that can break anything marketed as "unbreakable" than people that haven't broken the internet breakables. I've only read about broken 7.5" rears, Saginaws, etc, not that they aren't real but I think there are too many people that could F up a rubber ball and try to blame someone else.

Olds307 and 403- I too drove a 6.2 diesel in my old 2 ton Parcel Post truck. That was a torque monster of a motor- not unlike a 400. If the A-883 lived behind that I guess it is pretty stout after all.

The 6.2 was torquey but pretty sure that one had the SM 465 with the granny low. The NP440(A833 with OD) had similar gearing as the 700R4 or NV3500. I am looking for heavy duty Dodge only 4wd NV3500 version to dump the garbage electronic OD in my Dakota.

I've run 3 behind a pretty warm and high revving 283, a stock 327, a 350 with the standard Performer upgrades, and a 400 that was built specifically for max-torque towing. The only failure I ever had was due to me misplacing a thrust washer during a rebuild.
They are best suited in a non-performance situation because they don't love to slam-shift at really high RPMs. I suspect its because of rotating weight. Using GM Synchromesh fluid helps a lot. They also have the wide ratio of a 3 speed with an overdrive.
Personally, I really like them but have found that they work best behind torquey engines in cruiser situations. Definately not ideal for the dragstrip.
For whatever reason thed prices have really climbed over the past few years. I'm tempted to sell all mine and buy a Tremec because I think it would be a better choice for one of my projects.
