Sweet, I need to track one down. My current 350 has maybe 350 ft/lbs but probably less. Will a BOP regular bell housing work on that trans?

It's an oddball and was technically a truck transmission so it has the larger OD front retainer. However, I was able to chuck mine up in as lathe and turn it down to "car" size and used Allen head bolts. That let me use an old Lakewood scattershield.
Also be aware that there are 3, maybe 4 versions. They come with aluminum and cast iron cases. They also have 2 different front bolt pattern to attach to the bellhousing. One is traditional like a Muncie, the other looks like s Chrysler/GM hybrid. The second requires the MY6 specific bellhousing. Most of those are drilled in both patterns though and accommodate an 11" clutch.
One other side note is that they came from the assembly line with Hurst shifters.

The OD ones are basically a 3 speed with an OD. 3rd gear becomes the OD gear. so its 1,2,4 and 3

The gear spacing makes them be an economy and not a performance transmission, good for a cruiser.

It was really a beancounter's design, much like Ford's RUG. They took a solid existing design and made minor changes to have an overdrive. It's a beautifully simple solution, really.

Yes, thanks for all that input. It would work for me because I drive conservatively. I can appreciate a deep first gear and and overdrive. As for my buddy, he generally gets pissed at his mate and jumps in the TA to blow off steam. I'm thinking he should pass on this. So even if I find the Chevy version I would need to verify the right bell housing too?And the input shaft looks to be machined smaller on the GM version to accommodate the GM style pilot bearing. I've seen only one on fleabay and it had no bell housing. Olds307 and 403- my mail truck had a Turbo 400 trans and neither ever failed. Most problems were about the fuel injection.

The old 6.2 were very reliable, just gutless compared to the new turbo versions. How hard to find are these OD manuals. I need a Dana 35 ifs to replace the dying 205 mm ifs in my Dakota, so I will ask my wrecker if he has an overdrive 4 speed in a 80's Chevy truck.

No. There is no machining except the bearing retainer. Then it can be a direct swap to a Muncie/Saginaw/T10.

This particular one is an aluminum version with the GM bellousing bolt pattern. Note that the lower driver's side is actually a nut on a stud to tuck in the pocket in the case casting.

They are getting tougher to find and more expensive. I've paid between 150-300 for all of mine but haven't seen any that cheap in a long time. On the rare occasions that they pop up around here its typically 750-1000 now.

One other note. There is a 4x4 version as well. Obviously the rear case is different to bolt up to a transfer case but the output shaft is different as well. Everything else is interchangeable so a conversion is possible with Ebay parts.

Unlike all the newer trucks around here, the 80's trucks were mostly 2wd but manuals were fairly rare. I may have to be happy with my 3 spd auto with lock up but I will ask.
