my dist is out and i need to reinstall it and i think the engine was turned over. where on the cap is no. 1 so i can turn the engine over by hand to the timing mark 20 degrees btdc i think my timing light died so i am doing this old school by guess and by golly. i cannot go by the emissions sticker it is for an 80 and the engine is an 85-95 not sure. the vacuum diagrams don't match the intake.

take #1 plug out and use your finger to plug the hole, bump turn the engine till you feel the compression stroke. With the #1 piston at tdc put the distributor in with the rotor pointing at #1 on the cap

where is no.1 on the cap?
#1 is whichever terminal the rotor is aligned with. Most people will point the rotor at the #1 cylinder; I guess it's just easier to reference. But, it's not critical. Put the engine on TDC, put the distributor in, carefully check that the rotor lines up with a terminal on the cap. Make that #1, and start your firing order going counter clockwise.
There are a few variables once you pull a distributor like vacuum advance module and HEI plug position and plug wire length. It's a little puzzle if you forget how it came apart.

The above info is right. I still don't understand how you can't find the big number by the #1 and #8 spark plug and the large cast in numbers behind the water pump. I am also betting there is a big 5L cast on the side of your block. The last year for the Olds V8 was 1990 and it was a swirl port 307.

it is a 307 with an a5 or 5a intake git the dist in now just need a battery. and putting your finger over the hole doesn't help. it could be on intake or exhaust. take a valve cover off and look for valve overlap.
