I could swear I remember reading somewhere that the wagons had a 2.73 axle ratio standard. Can anyone validate or confirm? Not that it makes that much of a difference. They’re still dogs with the 3.8 2-bbl.

I didn’t think that anything came ‘standard’ in these cars – ha ha

Could you check your RPO codes? I think that GU2 was 2.73 gearing..

No. Depends on year/engine/and emissions

But yours, 1983/3.8/California emissions should be 2.73, with no optional ratios available.

My previous 1983/305/std emissions wagons got 2.41 axles.

Current wagon 1981/267/std emissions, came with 2.56, but has been replaced with later (metric studs) 2.41

My lump in the shop 1978/3.8/Cali emissions has a 2.73 also

You wanna talk real dogs, diesel wagons got 2.29 axles standard (but could go to 2.73 optionally)

At least they never inflicted the 2.14 axle on wagons

You wanna see a dog see my 1981 Malibu wagon. It had the Chevy 229 V-6 with the Saginaw three speed manual trans and 3:50 first gear. That had the 2:41 rear and it was just horrible. My '83 Bonnewagon had the Buick 231 automatic and the 2:78 rear according to my factory manual. Was there a 2:78 rear or was that a miss-print and it was a 2:73? I could never verify that.

I think I originally had a 2.56 ratio rear.....at least that's what I had believed over the years...it could have been 2.41's.

Jack that 229 had a strange power curve. It only breathed between 1000 and 2000 rpm. Add a 2:41 rear and it was like skipping gears on a 10 speed bike. You struggled to get it going and next gear it fell flat on it's face. I only felt safe in high gear going at 2000 rpm.

Mark,
When I first installed the 350 and still had the old rear end in it, 3rd gear of my TH350 almost felt like overdrive. It was a vast difference between the old 305 to the 350. The 305 felt like it was running out of steam at 70 mph. The 350 wants to keep pulling. The new rear made a world of difference.
