You young-un's pay attention. In two weeks I'll be 65 years old. I've been pretty lucky my whole life not getting hurt too badly. But last week while wrenching on a Jeep I blew out my hernia. OUCH!!!! Pain like I've never experienced. I wanted to put a gun at my head and just stop the agony. Instead I popped a pain pill and when the pain subsided I got myself to the emergency room where they pushed the strangulated organ back in through the muscle wall. RELIEF! The Doc said it was probably a combination of straining and a coughing fit from all the crazy pollen floating around that week. Now, here's why I said pay attention. I have known about this for 8 years and did nothing about it. It never really hurt so I figured why bother with an operation I might be able to do without. Bad idea. Now I have to drop everything and arrange an operation as fast as I can. Then I'll be flat on my *ss recovering as Summer slides by. Rats. All this could have been avoided if I had done two things: taken care of it when it was a small problem. And not ignored the fact that I am an old schmuck that can't wrench like a teenager anymore. So when you look in the mirror one morning and there's a 30/40/50 year old guy staring back- PAY ATTENTION! And take care of yourself.

here's hoping for a speedy recovery!

I"m older than you are Mark and we can't do what we use to but like yourself I don't let it stop me from doing what i need to do. I mowed my son's lawn today as i do on a weekly basis so it lets him and his wife focus on other stuff. I measured the distance I walked with my fitbit to cut the lawn and it was a 7 miles of grass to cut. The good thing about staying active is you'll recover quicker so you'll be wrenchin on the Jeep soon than you think. Good luck and a speedy recovery...:)

Mark,
We sometimes don't realize we're overtaxing our bodies until we experience some type of injury, screw up our backs, muscle pain, strains, nuts, etc. These are obvious signs that we've overdone it.
Do we learn from our mistakes....probably not.
Again, we're not the young bucks we once were...or thought we were. Well, in two weeks you'll be eligible for Medicare. I've already been a recipient for the past few years. I'll be 68 in a few weeks myself. take care of yourself, and speedy recovery. Hopefully. you'll be back at it before you know it.

Funny thing Jack. I was putting it off until I was covered by Medicare. Between Medicare and my Union plan I would be covered 100%. I couldn't go another two weeks without rupturing myself?!? :doh:As always- timing is everything! Steve- the Doc said that usually patients are so morbidly obese he can't tell what he's doing down there. He said I was pretty fit and popped it right back in. It pays to stay in shape!

You're right, Mark.
Timing is everything. I hope your union plan covers the bulk of the charges. Had I stayed with the electrical union, they would have covered me for the full amount.
Unfortunately, I don't have supplemental insurance. I know Medicare covers 80%. I guess, depending on how catastrophic your medical event is, it could put a nice dent in your bank account.

I fit in to all of this. I'll be 64 in about 9 weeks. I don't have the time to get the oral surgery my dentist told me I NEED. I CAN'T MISS WORK!!! My job helps me stay fit, it's alot of hard labor. My M.D.. tells me every year, other than the smoking, to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm 5'11" 170 lbs. with a 32 inch waist. Hell it killed me 2 years ago to miss 2 weeks for catorac surgery. I've been working 40 to 80 hours a week saving for my engine and transmission (and everything else needed with it) TRANSPLANT. Now I've got the money together and started getting the different parts delivered. The trans will be shipped on 6-4 and the engine has been on hold for months while I saved. I'm giving getting old one hell of a fight but it DOES SUCK

Doug- I heard that. But- there is no pain in the universe like dental pain. And the shoe always drops on a long holiday weekend......
