About as far removed from a G Body as they come, this is the car I've been tinkering with for the past little while. Don't hate on it just yet, it was built in Illinois, so it's technically a domestic, right? :p

It's a six speed 3.8 (231) that I'm more or less building for drag. Got a lot put into the car like full bolt-ons, a 94 octane tune and some drivetrain stuff. Last year it put down 280whp/254ft.lbs on a hub dyno. Nothing too crazy but still respectable for an NA V6. About a month or so ago the transmission came down and we put in an LSD, as well as mounted a six puck sprung clutch and lightweight flywheel. Bit of a pain to drive around town but it gets off the line fairly quick. Hoping to break into the 12s but haven't been having much luck with the street tires. If it makes it to the winter, strongly thinking about going turbo.

Power stuff:

Injen CAI
TB coolant bypass
RRE shorty headers
Injen 3" SS catback w/hi-flow cat
Custom 94 octane tune

Drivetrain:

TWM short throw shifter w/aluminum base bushings & 620g Big Type R knob
Torque Solutions shifter cable bushings
Quaife helical LSD
Bully Stage 4 six-puck sprung clutch
Aasco 11lb flywheel
Redline MT-90 fluid

Suspension:

Tanabe strut tower bar
Tanabe underbrace
Progress 24mm rear sway bar
Zmotorsports rear brace

Misc:

Energy Suspension poly motor mounts
225/50/17 Conti ExtremeContact DW tires
Zmotorsports door handle brace
Rear seat/cargo liner delete
Redline DOT4 brake fluid
Bone stock exterior!

Cool, does she like it?

Most people will say it's either a girl's car or a middle aged man who couldn't afford a Corvette lol

Yup she really likes it. I haven't seen her look after any of her previous cars like she does this one. It's all stock....automatic as she can't drive a stick.

In all honesty, the DSM 2.0 turbos had more tuning potential, but the later-model 3.8s were definitely unique in being a big-cube (for an import) front-drive sport coupe.

DSMs were capable of some pretty big numbers, but were also more on the fragile side, particularly with the drivetrain giving out (manuals especially) and the notorious crank-walk issues.

The 6G75 (3.8) was Mitsubishi's attempt to make power by throwing displacement at the problem. They didn't have the technology or budget for engine development like Honda did, so making the motor bigger was their solution. VVT is nice, but it's only on the intake side and a SOHC layout isn't really anything impressive for a mid 2000s era sporty car. Still, you get a lot of car for the money, and it responds fairly well to tuning.
