I just bought a 30 lb tank of R134a and of all places Pep Boys had the best price. It was $149.99 and they had it on hand. Online prices were close or a lot more. While searching I saw some articles that it would be going up drastically soon. Anyone know about this? Is it time to stock up?

Or we could use propane/isobutane like the rest of the world does. Cheap and a better refrigerant than 134a. Nevermind the whole flamability junk☠️.

I haven't heard that 134 was going to go up. Any idea why?

New cars are switching to r1234yf. Don't know if prices are going up now? But it will only be a matter of time and it will go up.

So will R134A be the next R12? That sucks.

The new one is a blend of r134a and something else. That should help keep it around for a little while.

That's certainly encouraging news. Thanks for that information.

I recently had to get licenced to buy the 30lb tanks,i,can buy all the small part store tanks i want but not the 30,i don't know why but it's one of those things they're mandating.
that new r1234 is $1000 a tank and it isn't even 30lbs either.what a racket.they spent a pile of money on the machine for the new freon.there's still more r134a cars out there than 1234's i don't think we have anything to worry about.

As of Jan 1, 2018 the 30 lb tank required a license. As melloelky pointed out, you can still buy all the 134A you want right now in the little cans without a license. The price has gone up because the manufacturers are jacking the prices, I read somewhere there is a tariff situation perhaps, and generally stopping use/sales. You would think demand would go down and supply should require a fire sale on 134A for a while, but apparently not so.

You think 134A is pricey, just try to find R12.

Yeah it'll be a while before r134a is phased out, if that even happens. My understanding is that the manufacturers are fighting the r1234YF mandate pretty hard. Plus r1234YF is flammable unlike r134a, so there is a safety factor involved, not to mention the insane price tag.
