How deep should the fan be in the shroud?

I've heard half in half out, 1 inch, all the way, etc...
I know it matters to a degree, but what is that degree?
I have kind of an odd setup, 350 Buick (narrower front to back than most v8s), 231 fan, and 307 shroud. Any help/input appreciated as always.

The back side of my blades sit even with the back side of the shroud. Of course, they flex some when they are spinning and its been WAY too long not running for me to remember that. I REALLY hope to change that soon . . .

half in half out to be most efficient

the Ranchero's fan was probably not located properly allowing you to win the race....:p

All the way out and then into the garbage and replaced with an electric fan.
