Is there anything on the title to indicate that a cutlass is a "real" 442? Been looking to get one in the near future and I've had sellers tell me that there is no way to tell it's a 442 on the title. Which is what I thought. But am looking at one now where someone says it's supposed to say 442 on title . Is it?

VIN will have a 9 in the eighth position. That's the only way to tell from a typical title. GM origin titles had either Cutlass Salon or Supreme depending on the base model the W42 option was placed. So pretty much that's what DMV's usually go by.

Apparently, South Carolina will let you title them however way you want to. When I got my 69 Hurst/Olds titled, she asked, so I said for the Make: "Olds" and then the Model: "Hurst." :)

Why not? :) Girl doing the titling didn't know any better I guess. She went out to look at the car to verify the VIN and didn't have an issue with it. Technically it was a 442, I suppose VIN matches the title, that's all I really care about..

I had my 85 442 full coverage thru Geico for a year with no plates..and after I go get plates from DMV and call Geico about coverage value and they say they thought it was regular Cutlass worth under $3000 and said I would have to get classic insurance to cover the value. So insurance company didn’t know the difference till told.

Yeah, they don't know just by looking at the VIN. The GK47 is all they know and it comes back as a Cutlass Salon. They SHOULD be aware, but most of them aren't. They insure grocery getters day in and day out and most of their "reps" are younger folks trying to eke out a living. They just don't care.
