I'd probably keep it for the reasons you already listed. If nothing else for the tank vent.

We kept the canister on the Camaro because we didn't want it to smell like gas. We didn't want unmetered air so we tied it in to the air intake on the filter side of the MAF.

If you replace the canister, go with one that only has two nipples and just discreetly tie it into the base of the air cleaner, inside the filter. Just an idea.

My car doesn't have a canister since it was a diesel. I'm not sure how that tank vents. I haven't looked closely at it yet. My car did smell like a lawnmower when I parked it in the storage but it was a hillbilly hack job so I'm not sure it was because it lacked a canister.

The hard part is finding a usable canister. As far as I know nobody is reproducing them and junkyard ones are a few and far between and can be a crapshoot when you do find them. Usually they are waterlogged or broken. Jared I like the idea of tying the line into the air cleaner base if I do decide keep it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I do delete it, can I just cap off the nipple for the vapor line on the sending unit and put a vented fuel cap on the tank? Or would I have to leave the vapor line nipple open on the sender?

Probably not your exact application, but available brand new.

I run mine. I had everyday performance drill the main body and tamp in a 3/8 tube. The hole is there, just needs drilled. A steady hand or your machine guy could get it done. At some point instead of that ugly hose running over I may sneak some 3/8 brake line sections along the inner fender, up the firewall, and up to near the carb and bridge the two with hose. Maybe. I found my canister in a junkyard from a lowish mile 4 Door bonne from the 80s and shook it upside down. No coal came out so I determined it good. Wix sells filters for the bottom. Year and a half later, no gas smell even in 100* fuel boiling summer heat. Make sure to nab the brackets and two 10mm bolts too.

We bought one new like what Driven listed, with just two hose connections. It was for an earlier model 2nd Gen Camaro with a different engine. Sean's 78 with the 350 originally had a canister with six or more hoses on it. Talk about over complicated.

I got a little more done on the car last night. I pulled the old speedometer cable out as well as the old throttle cable. They aren't bad, but removing them allows better access to the firewall and they are cheap parts to replace so I'll get new ones. Is there any reason not to replace the two piece speedo cable with a one piece cable? Getting the two piece one out was a b*tch because the threaded ends were too big to really fit between the body and the frame and that made it hard to slide it out. I had to crush the end of the cable to get it out. That wouldn't be an issue with a one piece since the speedometer end isn't as fat as the threaded transmission end. I'm still deciding what to do with the vapor line. I'm leaning towards capping it off and putting a vented fuel cap on. It's just less work and less money. I can always add it back in later. While I was under the car pulling the speedo cable out, I saw that one of my fuel lines is pinched between the body and frame. It doesn't appear crushed, but I can't pull it out. I'm gonna have to remove the nearest body bolt, lift up the body a bit, and pull the line out and reshape it so it's not getting pinched. And as careful as I am, I keep finding a chip here or there in the paint. It's bound to happen when you are reassembling a freshly painted I guess. I'll get over it eventually.
