    LED dash conversion

Time to get rid of those dingy 194's. Couple questions for those who've done it: 1. How many bulbs do I need. Not doing dome, footwells, etc., just dash. Gauges, hvac controller, etc. 2. Where did you get them from? Not looking to change colors, I'd like to keep it stock looking, just...

HELP! Need to find the brass horn contact replacement

The brass on the inner contact is worn down so far that it won't reach the ring on the cam anymore. They make replacements for the other side that attaches to the steering wheel pad but I can't find a replacement for this one. Anyone else dealt with this?

    Rear suspension bushing interchangeability

Trying to replace my sacked out rear control arm bushings. Are all 8 the same size/part? Want to stick with rubber and not poly so the Energy Suspension kits aren't an option. Moog has 2 packs, pn K6178, if they're all the same I can just order 4 sets and be good to go. Anyone know for sure?

Going to make the switch to LED for my gauge assy (sweeper style), and the climate control. Anyone know how many bulbs it takes?

    Can't figure out loose steering.

Had my '79 Cutlass since 1989. Over the years the steering has progressively gotten looser. Replaced the mushy rag joint, replaced all the steering linkage, and finally the steering gear itself with a Napa remanned unit. Had our mechanic check the alignment to make sure the caster wasn't off...

"Klunk" when shifting into 2nd gear

I need to pick some brains here. My folks are looking at buying an all original '87 Supreme that was recently traded into the local dealership by the original owner. Looks very clean according to the pics on the website. I can't get there to look at it myself. They test drove it and said it ran...

Frame rail compatibility: need second opinion

Found this replacement rail on OPG's website. Says "for Monte, Regal, Cutlass, Prix", but then theres an alert that says "does not fit 1978 Cutlass". Am I missing something? They're all the same in the rear except for the Caminos, right...

To RTV or not to RTV

My 15 year old son is replacing the oil pan on the 350 Rocket that he's prepping for his '78 Calais. Been helping him in the evenings but he's been trying to do what he can while I'm at work. He put the new one on yesterday and installed the gasket set dry. Been almost 30 years since I did this...

    Tail shaft interchange th200, th350

My son just picked up a 350 rocket/th350 for his 78 Calais to replace his 260/th200. His Cutlass is running the stock 2.29 rear end ratio and I know the new trans speedo drive is calculated for much steeper gears. Does anyone know if the tail shafts will interchange? That way he can keep his...

Figuring out displacement on a mystery Olds motor

My son is looking to swap the 260 out of his 78 Calais for something bigger. A hardcore Pontiac friend of mine just bought a '74 Ventura with an Olds motor in it that he wants gone. The seller told him it was a 350. I know in '75 they started putting 260's in them, but this is definitely a '74...

Coolant leaking from weep hole but water pump shaft is dry

I was always under the understanding that it came out from the shaft when the pump started going out. Any ideas?

Conflicting part # for rocker arm pivots

Trying to replace the rocker pivots on my son's '78 with the 260 V8. Sealed Power lists different part #'s for 1980 and up, Perfect Circle has the same one for '75 through '82. Of course only one is readily available and cheap. Is there REALLY a difference?

Bypassing the instrument light dimmer switch

We are replacing the dingy dash lights on my son's Calais with led bulbs. I'm pretty sure his dimmer isn't putting out full voltage any more and I believe the led lights need the full twelve volts to illuminate. Has anyone bypassed the dimmer so the dash lights are direct from the switch?

Engine oil for older flat tappet engines-ZDDP, etc

Been reading alot about how the reduced levels of ZDDP in all the oils nowdays is bad for older engines with flat tappet lifters. I know there are additives you can put in. Also alot of guys are running Shell Rotella T in their bikes because of their additive package. Kinda curious what everyone...

    Running with collapsed lifter: bad?

So if any of you remember reading about this last year, my 12 year old son picked up a barn-find 78 Calais with 62,000 miles that had been sitting in storage for the last 20 years. Gonna be our father-son project. Very good condition. So we drained fluids, replaced all the brake parts, put in...

How do you know when your master cylinder is bad?

So I'm trying to bleed my rear brakes and for the life of me I can't get anything to come out. I even unhooked the line from the wheel cylinder and nothing comes out of the line when I pump the pedal. And yes there is fluid in the reservoir. Does this mean the master is maybe shot?

Trying to bleed rear brakes- special tool?

Trying to bleed the rear drums on the '78 barn find/project Cutlass my son and I just picked up but for the life of me I can't get any socket to fit onto the bleeder. Does anyone know what size this is or if it requires a special thin walled socket? It's just a standard 7.5" rear end
