Build Thread-85 Cutlass Brougham-New Pics Added!

It's been a long time since my last post, but then it has been a very long, hot summer too. Sadly, the Cutlass now refuses to start, and I really don't want to work on it right now. It's been 93-97 degrees out with 90% humidity almost every day for the last 3 months. I can barely go outside to...

    GM Electrical Tech Needed

Well, the blue arrow points to the flasher for the hazard lights, if memory serves. It does NOT go into the fuse panel. Rather, it clips to the dash behind the radio on the bottom. The Brown arrow I believe points to the high beam switch, Purple is for the cruise control, and I believe the...

How much power am I making?

In all honesty though, the heads you need depend on the cam you have or want to use and the pistons that are in the engine right now. as for power, it could be anywhere from 250 to 350 hp depending on your definition of a mild cam, the heads that are there, the exhaust, etc. Also, why are you...

    Auto Code Scanners/Readers

The generic scan tools sold for OBD II vehicles ( 96 and newer by law, some 95's by option) will in no way work on these ancient computer systems. The best method for pulling codes on these cars is the paperclip trick, which shorts two connectors in the ALDL connector under the dash. I forget...

What would you do with this car?

The roof damage is a little scary, but how is the car otherwise? Is the underside rotted out? Does it have any real rust on it in the floors or elsewhere? If it is a salvageable car, I would probably do the paint and interior first, then worry about the drivetrain. That way, if you get cold...

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

I read the instructions on mine, and it says to leave it in the sun for 4 hours before using it for the first time, or if it has been sitting in storage for any length of time. It could be that the battery was not fully charged on yours and that is why it did not work properly. Mine is sitting...

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

I just bought a helmet. When I went to Harbor Freight, they had 2 models on sale for $50. One was the plain model, and it was only rated for ANSI 87. 1989, and darkened in 1/20,000 of a second. The one with the cheesy blue flame decals on it however, was rated to ANSI 87. 2003, a much newer...

Want Some Honest Opinions...Thinking of selling my Cutlass

It would be a fully completed car if I sold it, not an incomplete project. I have most of the parts to finish it, but I am putting the time into my AMC right now as I want to sell it off first. Plus, I am trying to finish my house and that's taking up a bit of my time as well. As far as the...

Want Some Honest Opinions...Thinking of selling my Cutlass

Actually, mine was a factory V6 car too. I did the swap myself (it predates my time on this forum), and even went so far as to use the wiring harness from a 1985 305 Grand Prix so that the wiring would not be cut and spliced. To look at it under the hood, it looks like GM did the installation...

Want Some Honest Opinions...Thinking of selling my Cutlass

I am sort of debating this in my mind right now as I could really use the money. If I do this, it likely will not be until the fall as I will need time to get some other things in order first. Now, if I sold it, I would fix all of it's problems, it would have working A/C, and probably even a new...

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

The only problem with long sleeves is the time of year. The heat index is 106 every single afternoon lately, and frankly I really can't be outside for more than 5-10 minutes in shorts and a t shirt. Long sleeves would probably kill me from heat exhaustion. Sadly though, I have no money right...

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

Well, your post made me do a bit of research into them. It seems that all helmets that comply with the "ANSI Z87.1" standard ALWAYS protect the operator from the most harmful rays-whether they are in the darkened position or not. You can get temporary flash blindness when the auto darkening ones...

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

Thanks for the heads up! If that's the case, I think I will just weld in direct sunlight using my old helmet as I can see the work area through it well enough to set up the weld. From what you have said, the solar helmet sounds even more dangerous than the fixed tint ones.

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

After thinking about it, I have decided not to do any more welding with it until I can afford the $50 auto darkening helmet at Harbor Freight in another week or two. I am a bit absent minded as of late, and it is all too easy for me to accidentally spark it when my helmet is not in position. I...

The $89 Welder From Harbor Freight

I have to say, don't buy one if you want one after using it. it welds fine, but it is always hot. What does that mean? It means the wire current does not shut off with the trigger. instead, if you touch it to what you are welding when you are setting up, it will arc. Do this enough times and you...

Where in the World is 85CB??

Sorry everyone! I have been busy trying to finish my house and have just today started working on my AMC project again. I finally tried out my new cheap welder, and if you are thinking of buying one-don't. It welds fine, but the trigger does NOT turn off the current. So, it's always hot like a...

    Bill of Sale No Title

A bit off topic, but this is a good time to remind people that putting a location in your profile is important for this sort of question. So please, at least put a state or province in your profile!

    Heater Halp!

The heater box is held on with bolts all around it, top, bottom, sides, and from the inside. You will need to remove the screen on the top to get to some of them, and may have to pull the fender and wheelwell liner to get to some of them too.

Types of Jobs im good for help me out if you can

Well, I don't know what to tell you except that a military attorney would be a Judge Advocate general (JAG) in at least one branch of the service, and a map maker is called a cartographer. As for this economy, yes it is quite scary. I know that I have to change my major from engineering to...

    Bill of Sale No Title

It varies from state to state. In some states, after a car is a certain age ( 20 or 25 years old), they no longer issue titles for them and instead go by a bill of sale. I believe this is true of Maine and Alabama, but it may have changed since then. If you therefore can tag it in one of those...
