Check the "batt" or "charge" indicator light on the dash,beleive it or not if that bulb is burnt out the alternator will not charge.The system needs the bulb to complete the circuit.Just turn the key to on and see if it lights up

I'm having a 403 olds built by a engine builder that builds engines for some pretty famous car guys and he reccomends that break in oil along with whatever additive the cam manufacturer uses
You can remove the entire computer control harness,it comes through the firewall behind the glovebox,removing all of that wiring really cleans up the engine compartment
Just look at the casting number on the top of the block behind the timing cover right where the oil sending unit screws in if you have a standard 403 block the number will be 557265-4b and if you have a number of 557265-4a or 554990-4a you have a rare "Solid main web block", I doubt that you...
