The Monte Carlo, Regal and Cutlass seem to have larger openings. The Malibu/El Camino/Lemans and all the wagons have openings that are a little bit closer on the lower front edges.
Monte, Regal and GP have the round openings, Cutlass falls in with the rest with a squared off wheel well.

They aren't rubbing where the opening is flattened in the top center. They are rubbing at the bottom forward edges of the wheel opening.
Same issue I've had on my Malibu coupes and wagons. The Bonneville wagons were fine, again due to the rounder openings

I have 215 65 15s on the front of the 81 Malibu with a 15X7 Rally. The 78 El camino also has 215 65 15s but with a 15X8 rim. On problems with ether combination.
