I swore I read somewhere that the 1978 Malibu was a 1 year only spindle that is separate from the 79-up. Is this true?

I need to purchase a stock driver side spindle for my 78 malibu as the one on the car has stripped caliper mounting bolt holes.

I just wanna know what will or won't work. Thanks to all who reply.

Yea, the spindle/bearings/rotor are one year only for '78. '79 up are the same regardless of inch stud ('79-'81) or metric stud ('82 up) rotors. The calipers will work on all years

Thank you! I will be hunting for a 78' specific spindle.

the only difference is the 78 had the small outer bearing and maybe the studs are sae. For the stripped threads you could use a helicoil to fix it, it's sort of a common problem. In this video he needed to turn the helicoil in another 1/4 turn and break off the tang at the end of the helicoil

I think I would just put the 79 and later spindles on it and be done with it. Finding a 78 spindle will really narrow your search. You could pull the whole assembly off any 79 and up gbody..

I have a 78' monte, and am scrapping both my spindles. One side is a 78', one side is a 79'. I can check but if my memory is correct I have a 78' on my drivers side. Where are you located? Not looking for cash. Both side have almost new rotors, seals, pads, calipers and rotors (maybe 500 miles on all). Heavy to ship but if anywhere Pa there yours for the taking. I going the dual piston s-10 set up.

It's an easy job to put in a helicoil and the tools would be cheaper than the shipping costs.
