Yes, Pontiac 301.
My guess is the console delete option was chosen after selecting the trip odometer, tach, gauges, clock in the dash, cloth buckets, color coded seat belts, cruise, power windows, reclining bucket seat, am/fm 8 track etc.....cost added up.
Maybe they put their lunch box between the seats...….I think the console was ~$300 option. Not positive.
Our first 78 Grand Am didn't even have gauges, clock or tach. Had the dog dish hub caps, tilt, cruise, 8 track, sport steering wheel, cloth buckets and console.
Dealers probably eliminated options to keep the price more attractive as well. Just the way things work.

yes, the grand am is still for sell ....I had grandamman post it for me , I haven't been on the site for awhile..

Especially in that time period, by the later 80's the dealer ordered cars were more often loaded with options, usually the oddball or really low option cars seem to be the customer ordered ones, from what I've found.
