I recently purchased a 1984 Hurst Olds. It has the 307 engine. Some one has put headers and a new carb on it and it runs ok. Is the 307 worth a darn or is a motor swap in my future?

depends what you are looking for. if you want speed, then upgrade. if you just want to cruise, then the 307 should be fine if its running good.
are you looking to restore the car true to form or dont care?

at the end of the day, its completely up to you.

i just upgraded (my 307 had internal issues) to a 350 from a 307, but would have kept the 307 if it was running good.

but i am almost sure you will hear swap for more power....and the obligatory "put an LS in there" as well

lol

Although you cant beat an LS for power its starting to become a more common occurrence to open the hood and see an LS. I am trying to get one of every special G Body I have a Buick GN I bought new, An El Camino I rebuilt, this Hurst Olds and I'm looking for a Pontiac euro coup! I like to drive them!!

Keep in mind there were 3500 made. Several have seen horrible deaths, others just rotted away in someone's barn or field somewhere. I would guestimate that probably only half of the 84's are left alive at best.

If you want an H/O to have some guts without having to change out a lot of crap or rewire damn near everything, find a 350, 403, and 455 if the 307 isn't doing you enough justice. But just in case the price of the cars shoot through the roof, you probably would be best served to keep the old 307 and any other stock components you swap out. But that's just my opinion.

If you put an LS in it, I'll disown you. :)

I live in South Carolina now. Both were found here in Spartanburg almost no rust just from sitting the owner of the Hurst had it sitting partially covered the El Camino came out of a barn sitting on concrete!

1983/1984 Hurst Olds, 1977/1978 Trans Am Special Edition, 1968-1970 Chevelle SS, 1970-71 Hemi Cuda.

How does it run now? Edelbrock carb? Don't push the 307 past 5000 rpm or bad things will probably happen. It is a windowed main block. Also won't make power past that anyways. I had very good luck with 307's and most Small Block Olds V8's.
