Hello everyone. I’m hoping to find some help with a car I just bought and figured this would be the best place to look. I just bought a 1984 Monte Carlo VIN: 1G1AZ3798ER118759. I used to have an 84 when I was younger, so I’ve always wanted another. Anyway, this car I bought doesn’t have an engine or transmission. From the VIN, I can tell this is a base model and originally had a V6, but the guy I bought it from said that it had a V8 in it last. He supposedly hadn’t owned it for very long. There are motor mount brackets present on the cross member, along with dual exhaust (from the firewall back). Also in the rear floor board and trunk are two V8 exhaust manifolds, drive shaft, AC compressor, torque converter, radiator and power steering pump. All of the wiring under the hood appears to have been disconnected, not cut.

So, my predicament is that I don’t know how to tell if in fact a V8 was last installed in the car or not. I would like to have a V8, but if it’s already set up for a V6, it would be easier to purchase and install as such. I guess I’m wondering if anyone can tell me based off of the appearance and location of the engine mounts, and also any wiring present. I’m not ready for an extensive build right now, so I’m really just trying to get it running and moving for now, then work on it more as I have time.

Thanks a lot in advance!

the car looks prety clean so why not find a 350 and 200 r4 that are in good condition.

Well the engine mounts are not SBC mounts and I wouldn't waste time installing a V6 but from the looks of things you should have maybe held out for a running Monte.
IMO this will be an extensive build since you don't even know what you are starting with and already need and engine, trans, wiring, accessories etc etc.

The bold 9 means it was a 229/3.8 V6.
Thanks. Yeah, I know it was built with a V6. But with the story from the guy I bought it from, it having dual exhaust and the large hood scoop (I don't know if anyone would take the time and effort on the exhaust and hood for a V6), I guess I think it's probable that there was a V8 in it the last time this car was road worthy. I don't want to buy a V6 if it's setup for a V8, and vice versa.

Thanks! Yeah, and I still might. But I couldn't pass this up for the price. It is extremely clean with no rust. Minus the engine and trans (and accessories), the rest of the car is very complete.

If it is within your budget you might want to look for a good running V8 donor car and transfer everything to the Monte.

I think you'd have an easier time finding a 350 than a v6 that is in good running condition and easier to find parts for the 350
