I started my voyage with a 83 SS. I soon found out that the body mount supports where severely rotted. So I ended up finding a decent 85 CL shell to work with instead. The first pics are the rot box I started with surprisingly the frame was in decent sharpe besides the passenger rear frame horn and the front body mount holes.

My plan is to have a mostly strip car but still be able to street drive it occasionally. I already had a 11.6:1 350 with fully ported 034 bow tie heads and a summit ct101 camshaft. Desk top dyno puts at an estimated 491 hp with a race fuel mix. I’ll probably hit it with a 100-150 shot of nitrous after I get some base lines. The car I originally bought had a built th350 and a 3:73 Posi and I installed a 3500 stall. Below are pics of the frame and some of the work I have gotten done so far. I will be starting the umi frame notch tomorrow as I plan on running 325/50/15 Nitto 555 on a 15x10 weld drag lites with 5.5 backspacing hopefully they fit. Some feed back on that would be great.

I do plan on doing a 10 point cage but not until next year. I want hopefully get some runs in this summer. It will get a 9 inch or a 12 bolt in the future as well when $$$ permits.

Depending on where you live you may have to have a cage to run the strip. Sticky strip an that hp you'll want more than the 7.625 rearend.

A cage will add alot of strength to your frame an there cheap to build. You got it apart so be easier to add in the pads for the 10 point, then add the bars anytime after its back together.

I will be racing a New England dragway in epping NH. You do not need a cage unless you’re running faster 11.99. I might get shut down my first run who knows. From what I understand the cage gets welded through the floor to the frame per the NHRA rules. The car isn’t going to have any interior other than racing seats. I’m going to clean por 15 and use raptor liner on the floors. I do plan on going with a 9 inch or a 12 bolt in the future when I have more money.

Ford 8.8 is an option as well. Might be a little more budget friendly. Either fox body or like a Lincoln town car I believe fit. Companies make kits for the swap.plus the 8.8 has tone of aftermarket options. They're plenty tough

You'll run faster than 11.99 with you hp an 150 shot. If you weld pads when frame an body are apart then you just got to cut holes add an weld bars threw floor, simple.

I've been threw this myself. I own a 86 SS with 4 link an panhard, added inner 16" tubs(will fit a 20" wide tire) , 8.8 with 4.11 gears, 502 BBC with 2 shots 250 nitrous, 400th. Rearend is narrowed and cars got 8 point cage, an it's only has the 2 seats an it's still street legal. Just have to finish hooking body on.

I got ya now... I was thinking pads on the floor like a unibody  that makes perfect sense. Do you think 1/8 inch is thick enough for that? That’s what I was going to use to box the frame. I’ll just grab some extra for the pads. As for the nitrous I’ll probably do that and the cage at the same time next winter. I’ll run all motor this year, that’s if it’s done his summer.
