Well I found a 200-4r trans out in the local yard today. Its already out of the car and everything and the guy said he would take 150$ for it. Is this a good price overall? I'm not sure what it is out of, doubt a grand national, but it looks to be in good shape. What is this transmission's tolerances when it comes to hp and torque? Is it hard to build them up to t-type or grand national standards? And can I take a 10in torque converter from a TH350 and put it in this 2004r?

Re: WIW 2004r trans and info

On the rear left side i believe is a tag that has what the trans was built for ie. Chevy,Buick, Pontiac etc etc and year. It looks like this..

Post the tag and and somebody could help decipher it. As for the HP ratings i think stock should hold up to 300hp give or take a few horses. Any 2004r could be built to grand national standards, but they aren't that strong in stock form. A good rebuild along with some upgrades will be sufficient for most engines. I have heard of the turbo regal guys swapping out the stock BRF governors for Monte SS one's. Specific trans have higher shift points obviously the "high" performance trannys have the better ones. Along with the governors the valve body's are also specific to the performance versions. As for the th350 torque converter i have no idea..

Even the 'high performance' versions can't take a whole lot of abuse in stock form.

The H.O. 307 originally in my 442 ate up the "good" OZ code 200-4R twice before I blew the motor...

CZ arent bad tostart with. They can be built with a GN rebuild kit an have a great trans. I have never heard of Turbo Regal guy swapping his BRF gov for one out of a SS, the other way around yes.

No you can't interchange the torque converters. Your Th350 should have a standard TC and the 2004r has the lock-in TC which is a completely different animal. Even if your TH350 had a lockup converter (ie TH350C)they still wouldn't interchange. I accidentally stuck the wrong one in(found a lockup TC for a 350 and tried to put it in the 2004r and couldnt get the motor and transmission back together. Needless to say I was really wishing I would've labeled with a felt pen where these TC's belonged because when they're all out in a pile they tend to look really similar It would've saved me oh, 3-4 hours of :wtf:

I just talked to the guy who owns the yard and he's gonna have one of his wreckers take the number off of it. He thinks he remembers it coming out of a Cadillac... Did cadillacs even have those transmissions?

As for Monte Carlo SS trannies. The later the better like the tag indicated in the above photo. '87 CZ
Which ever 200-4R you choose, it will still need some upgrades. It also depends on how it will be used.

Re: WIW 2004r trans and info (I got numbers)

Well I went back out to the yard. The transmission has a turqoise colored ID plate with the letters OG in the middle of the plate and the code 157-2T83OG2054. Any feedback on this transmission and its quality is greatly appreciated.

On a quick note, this transmission had the two wires hanging off the driver side of it. I was told you had to rig up a switch but what does that control? And will a 3 speed B&M shifter work with this transmission? It has a torque converter as well, anyone know what the stall is stock on these?

I'm rebuilding my 350 and putting in comp cams xe268h which they estimated 437hp and 458lb of torque. I'm using 3.73 posi gears. Was even considering possibly switching out my 333882 2.02/1.60 heads for a set of vortecs out of the yard, but it will cost me more for machine work since vortecs cant handle that cam without machine work and stiffer springs.
