What is the ideal temps to keep the 2004R alive and happy for a long time?

180F max?

That’s tricky because depending on trans and who you ask your going to get a big variation in answers but I would say 180-225 is a good range to be in with in

Do you already have a gauge installed to read temps?
If you are doing towing or have a higher stall converter you can always add an auxiliary cooler.

I've heard manual runs way cooler & don't over heat like a auto but then again I'm bias to the third pedal club. ;)

Or just run a big auxiliary cooler and bypass the radiator one. I am doing exactly that.

like anything else there's a variety of opinions.one of the 200r4's i ran before was from an aftermarket company and they had a rigid install guideline.their take was,run an aux cooler in conjunction with the cooler in the radiator, always run the trans using the lock up it's run cooler.short bursts of high temperature spikes on a temp gauge when racing or accelerating is normal behavior.long periods of high temperature spikes is means for concern.higher stall converters will build sightly higher temps in stop and go traffic.in their opinion 250 degrees was on the hotter side of things.if the fluid is dark or has an out of character smell it's time to change it.they really pushed to changed the fluid on the cheap and change it often.I've followed this with my current one and it's treated me well.
