Can I change out my 200r for a 350 transmission is it an easy thing to do? What do I have to do, or should I just leave the 200 in. I want to put a 350 rocket in.

200-4r has the overdrive, 350 does not. Do you plan on doing much highway driving? Here are the differences in gearing.

1st/2nd/3rd/OD
350: 2.52/1.52/1/N/A
200-4r: 2.74/1.57/1/0.67

so if I want travel, is the 200 the best thing for me? will it burn up on me? will I have to change my rear-end to?

Here is my cardinal rule. If you are running a 3.42 or numerically less gear ratio, then you can get away with using a TH350 trans. If your running 3.73 ratio or numerically higher, you need an Overdrive trans. The grand nationals use the 2004r with a 3.42 ratio posi rear end. So if you plan on going on the highway at all and want to do any sort of cruising then I would say stick with the 2004r. It will be cheaper since you already have it and the stock crossmember. The 2004r has a better gear selection, IMO, than the 350 trans as well.

MWA, do you have a 200 metric trans or the 2004r? The 200 metric trans is a 3 speed.

I believe he's got the 200-4r and I'd say stick with it too. 350 is just not right setup for highway driving. My buddy can't go over about 40mph without revving way too high. Only downfall is I am led to believe that the 350's can handle a little more horsepower without upgrading it. Both 700r-4 & 200-4r need some upgrades internally to handle above 350-400 hp. They can both be upgraded pretty cheap to handle 500+ hp.

when I bought the '81 ... I think I was more let down with it having a th350 than it having a 260! It was night and day from driving my 87 with a stock 307/200-4r ... I really noticed one less gear, more-so than the lack of balls (lets face it a 307 aint setting tracktimes either). Both matters have been resolved.

Plus, with the 2004r you have the possibility of going with a bigger gear set later. Yes the th350 is stronger in stock form and can handle serious abuse unlike the overdrive transmissions. The main reason OD transmissions don't hold up as well is due to insufficient cooling. I loved my 350 but I'm upgrading to the 700r4 because I have 3.73 gears and am tired of 4000rpm at 70mph.

200 metric trans or the 2004r? The 200 metric trans is a 3 speed. I think I have the metric trans. How can I tell the difference. My shifter is on the floor. I have an 83 cutlass.
