Quick question, wanted to know what’s the best transmission to pair with a Chevy 305 V8? I was leaning more towards the Th350. What do you guys think? (Disclaimer I’m not too familiar with transmissions so I figured I asked.)

200R4 would be my pick

The 200R4 has a slightly deeper 1st gear over the 350 but also has a 4th overdrive gear which means you can cruise on the freeway with a decent rear gear without the RPM's of a 3 speed.

Ahhh okay I didn’t know that. And overdrive is for fuel economy correct?

Depending upon your budget, a 700R4/4L60 may be a better bet than a TH350. These transmissions offer both an overdrive and a 3.06 first gear (instead of 2.48). If your rear axle ratio is in the 2s, this will net you better acceleration without a rear axle mod. You will need to set up a mechanical torque converter lockup kit, easy to do out of the car. Many on this forum don’t like them, but for a 305, you won’t break it. Will stand up to a mild 350 too.

Overdrive helps with highway mileage and gets you out of the 2200 RPM drone zone if you put on louder mufflers. 200-4Rs are getting harder to find. However, if you will go with 3-series gears in the rear axle, the 200-R4 is better choice - the 3.06 is less helpful with 3s.

Generally the more gears in the transmission the better as it keeps the engine within its power band better.
