I picked up what should be a roller cam 307 a couple of weeks ago. 7A heads, aluminum intake, ect.. Does anyone know of any options for the camshaft? Not wanting anything huge just an upgrade from the vin Y tiny camshaft. Cant even seem to find a replacement cam for the vin 9 engine which would be pretty decent. Most of what i found are retrofit roller camshafts or flat tappet cam saying they will fit my engine.

An interesting thing about the VIN 9 valve springs (which are also 350N Diesel springs) is that they're used on both flat tappet and roller VIN 9 engines. 1985 was the last year the 307 was flat tappet, and that was VIN 9 only. 84 Y engine was the last flat tappet Y.

So, springs shouldn't be a problem to find. 2.09" free length (Y is 1.96"). closed load at 1.67" is 85-95 lbs. (Y= 76-84), open load at 1.220" is 203-217 lbs (Y= load at 1.270" is 180-194).

Spring GM part number is 22510372. The Melling aftermarket "equivalent" (pretty darn close for specs anyway) is VS-1100. General price of the Melling spring's is roughly about $80-100 per set.

And just in case anyone was wondering, the flat tappet 307s use .842 lifters like all the rest of the flat tappet 70s-80s Olds V8, and the roller 307's use .921 lifters. Those are NOT interchangeable.

Unfortunately, for 307s, there's not much out there besides NOS GM cams or way too lumpy cams for the VIN Y/9. The 9 roller cams (p/n 22531804) IIRC, have the same effective lift/duration as the flat tappet 9 cams. I do happen to have an NOS roller 9 cam, but it's not for sale. Sorry.
