Hi folks! i have a mildly built 350 from 74 or 75 in my monte and i am trying to figure out what heads are on it. I looked for the signature double hump of performance sbc heads but instead there is a recessed groove where the double hump or other marking would be. The only numbers i could see are 8535 on the front of the passenger head. Motor is in the car so i would like to dissasemble as little as possible. Attached is a shitty diagram i made. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. -Ethan

If you pull one of the rocker covers and get the casting # it will tell you exactly what you have. If the heads are original to the engine get the stamping numbers from the block in front of the RB head and it will tell you what the engine came out of.

I found out the motor is from a 74 police or 75 federal application. Thanks for the help i will pull the valve cover tomorrow.

I would say the numbers are probably a job number stamped into it from a machine shop.

Maybe young guys dont hot rod anymore cuz old heads be like this. Ill figure it out.
You had your most thorough answer in post #2/1st reply.

Us, "old heads", are like this because we all had to learn the hard way: research, trial and error, and actually learning skills, not just hopping on a forum and asking questions expecting the members to build your car through a keyboard. Take a screwdriver, and scratch the head. It should be immediately apparent whether you have iron or aluminum heads. HOWEVER, your research should have shown that there are very few (if ANY) factory aluminum small block Chevy heads prior to the LS platform.
