For starters what condition is the block? Next would be what kind of performance are you looking to have? Then are you going to do some or most of the work yourself? You could have something with respectable power for about the cost of a crate motor. The funny thing is at times the smaller parts can drive up the cost more than expected. I rebuilt a '70 L48 that has me between $1200-$1800 that includes the core, machine shop cost, additional tools, dress up goodies, a few oops extras, a few !@#$ unusable purchases, needed ignition parts, carb rebuld kit & the needed rebuild parts. Before jumping right in & start thrashing start to look at what you might light to run making sure everything works together (don't over cam, over carb, etc...) What might work for one build may not work with yours. Research first, ask somewhat detailed questions & we can help you with it.

It depends on your budget also, with skyrocketing machine shop prices and finding a reputable shop it makes it hard to beat buying a crate engine with a warranty, or even consider an assembled short block with you doing the rest of the assembly.

Start with a 1 pc rear main seal, roller cam block if possible. Summit sells an 0.030'd CNC'd 4-bolt block for about $800. Needs a 1-pc crank and oil pan, about $250. Needs pistons but you can reuse your 305 or 350 rods. Vortec head are still $850 a pair new. If you will go fuel injection, a complete GM long block 4-bolt truck engine is $2300. It lacks the pushrod hole for the mechanical fuel pump.

If your handy and can do some of the assembley yourself you can make some very good power for a little cash. Or you could trade some time for the work and still be in the cheap. Best to get a running Vortec complete motor from a yard or a local add. $2-300. at the most. By VORTEC I mean the 1996-2000 Cnevy or GMC motor with the 4 on each side intake bolts (casting 906 or 062 in the head) these are the only good motor to build for cheap. Clean and freshen the motor or if its a good runner then just add a set of 1.6 rocker to make it around 350hp and a lot of torque. Next step is to clean and freshen (rod mains cam bearings if need and barrel hone and new rings.) New reground roller hyd roller cam off of ebay $140-160 and $15. shipping. Some home porting and valve springs for 500+ lift and your around 400hp and 400TQ. Last order a $850 stroker kit for a standard bore, this will make it 377 ci. This is a balanced kit from Comp. Products and your at around 450HP. and 480TQ. Those vortec heads are the best iron heads GM ever made and the blocks show little or no wear in the cylinders. These are just old school gen. 1 motors, 75 on the mains 45 on the rods and 66 on the head bolts. And all the bearings from the mid 60s on up and head gaskets are all the same. Only the intakes are different. You can reuse the pan, timing cover and rear seal if the look good along with the balancer and flex plate.
