Hello everyone, i found a bone stock 1974 350 with 50k miles and finally put it into my el co but now that it runs good im ready to try my hand at making a bit of power out of it.

I have done some research i believe this is a good combo for a decent hopefully 400ish torque and hp build, any additional information or recommendations would be greatly appreciated and helpful, this is my first time trying to put together a motor.

Also I already have the Edelbrock heads so
I would prefer to stick with them if they will work for my goal

350 stock truck 010 1974 short block
Edelbrock E-street 64cc 185cc heads (plan on porting) #5089
Compression will be around 9.5
XE274H with comp springs and lifters
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
MSD Distributer
650 Holley dp mechanical(also have 750 Holley dp mechanical)
1-1/2 headers
2.5inch dual exhaust with H pipe no cats

Max RPM i would want to run it to is 6000
Note: This engine is going into a manual trans car with 3.73 posi and 255/60/15s.
Questions -
  1. What could the possible crank torque and Horsepower output be?
  2. Is this cam the best choice for my setup? Its going to be street/strip with power brakes and AC
  3. How much of a power loss with 1 1/2 headers compared to 1 3/4?
  4. 750 or 650 carb?
Thanks for any information or opinions!

400hp would be wishful IMO. This is a nice combo, and could net you 300-350hp. Maybe a little more.

That cam is nice. I briefly ran the 286h (using heavier springs), so that's an option. Plenty of vacuum.

I'm running 1 3/4 headers, so idk..

I'm having people tell me my 650 is too much for my similar setup. Go small before big would be my suggestion.

I'd guess that's probably good for 350hp/375tq. I doubt it cares much if it's got a 650 vs a 750 as long as it's jetted correctly. MSD distributor probably won't give you any more power or reliability over a decent HEI, but you get a free sticker. If you haven't already ordered your cam, I'd call any major company's helpline and run your combo by them. I like Comp's XE line but there may be a better option out there.

Unless you have access to a flow bench I wouldn't do anything more than possibly gasket match the heads.
XE274H with comp springs and lifters
If it is within your budget I would consider upgrading to a comparable Howards Hydraulic roller with retro fit lifters, this will eliminate any issues with breaking in the flat tappet properly and the need for any oil additives
MSD Distributer
Really no advantage if this is just a HEI replacement distributor
1-1/2 headers
I would run 1-5/8" primary tubes, plenty of them for our cars that fit well without issues, I have Ebay stainless headers and even those fit well.
