Would a built 4l70e (Jegs) last behind a cammed l96 in a 87 elcamino ,would be a lot lighter than the 4l80e? Thanks. Rod. Merry Xmas everyone!

The weight of a 4L80 is small price to pay for durability.

The weight difference between the two is only about 35 lbs. Parasitic loss of a 4L80 would be negligible considering the power an L96 can make. You will be producing over 400 hp with that engine if done right. There are people that claim a “built” 4L70 is the way to go but at its core, the internals are fragile and often fail even with stock engines. If starting from scratch I would do a 4L80 and never have to worry about it. It will also increase the value of your car.

The 4l70 is based off the 700r4 which way designed to give 140hp 4.3 and sbc's the power to lug boats up the boat launch.

The 4L80 is a th400 that was designed for 1 ton pickups to haul 20k of stuff with 400hp big blocks.

The 4l70/60/700 is probably fine especially if you just want to cruise, but both need the same computer control, both need a new driveshaft and crossmember so the overall cost is about the same to install.

I disagree, a junkyard core 4L80e can get a stockish rebuild for under $1k. So you are still cheaper than an equally strong built trans with install being equal.

The cost is not even close to equal.

Yeah, you finished what I meant to say.

Cost wise a 60/70e is no cheaper or easy to install than an 80e.

An 80 with a warranty from a junkyard or a local good rebuilder is going to be the same or cheaper than a level 7 60/70e from jegs or any online place.

The only reason in my opinion to build a 60/70e is because the car had one factory like a 4th gen Camaro with 450hp NA and you would have to bash the floor or get crossmember and driveshaft mods.

You could have busted my horrid grammar, saying equal far too any times in one paragraph.
