After a rain out on Sunday the Snowball derby was run yesterday. The 1st place finisher was disqualified due to having titanium caps over brake pistons. No exotic metals are allowed at the Snowball. Interesting how they found it. Here are some pics.

Snitches get stitches!

There was some goob on Drag Week that threatened a competitor with ratting him out for straying from the route. He made the checkpoint, but this guy saw him come in from the wrong direction. The "offender" was following his 80yr old father's navigation. Some people are just plain old d-bags.

The person he mentioned by name gave a response, but did not deny he was the one who told. It is interesting that he says this doesn't enhance performance. If it doesn't help then why did he do it? lol

I think thats just how those calipers are sold (Brembo) The tech inspector is a notorious stickler (some sanctioning bodies could benefit from that)

I went to HS with Chad Finley, he led the majority of the race a few years ago until the battery finally gave out, the alternator wasnt charging.

Hes since wised up and bought a dirt late model.

Go to the World 100 @ Eldora, makes this seem like a go kart race between all the rich kids and wreck-to-pass'

And to add, the titanium cap probably does give an advantage but 5 flags isn't a track where they use a lot of brake, so they arent generating enough heat to need the low conductivity of the titanium to keep heat out of the calipers.

Im sure there was plenty of other "exotic" materials on the cars besides that. Cup cars have used tungsten for ballast for years (The Eury's, cousins to the Earnhardts built the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd finishing cars at Fury Race Cars) and titanium fasteners in low shear places is pretty common. Plus all the carbon fiber duct work filtering down to these cars from the cup stuff.

Not to mention most of those cars probably have magnesium center quick changes.

They use a lot of brakes at Five flags. It's a 1/2 mile track with not a lot of banking. Ricky Brooks is the tech guy there and he sticks to the rules. This is the 3rd time since 2013 the leader has been disqualified. Chase Elliott was disqualified for Tungsten weight a couple of years ago. He treats everyone the same whether you are a local guy are a big name racer. Saw him throw Kyle Busch and Steven Wallace (Rusty Wallace's son) out one year. According to what I have read the brakes didn't come like that. They were modified, but not really sure. I would love to make it to the World 100 one year.

with the long corners l they have if they used alot of brake they'd loose too much speed in the corner which they would not make up on the short straights to repass the guys who got by you entering the corner

TRACK LENGTH …………………..1/2 mile in racing groove (103 feet short at inner edge)
TRACK WIDTH……………………….55 feet (Turns), 48 feet (Straights)
BANKING………………………………..15 degrees (Turns), 9 degrees (Straights)
PIT FACILITIES……………………….Paved portion on inner 1/4 oval and front straight, water, scales, concessions, electric scoreboard, vendors for racing equipment, fuel, and tires

They do use a lot of brakes due to the speeds they carry during the race and the traffic around them. When there is no traffic brakes aren't used as much but on a 1/2 mile track with 36 cars for 300 laps there is pretty much always heavy traffic.
