I know I'm late, but I need some info on what rear to look for if possible for direct bolt up to a 83 Regal. Would like to keep it GM if possible, but will give Ford a try .lol I have heard the S-10 crew cab rear would fit changed to leaf spring, not sure of year and the explorer not sure of year

I have to ask, what are you using the car for and how much power are you making.
It's street me and my nine year old just tinkering... A 455 buick with a 400 maybe swapped for the 200 OD...So torque is there at 500ft lbs and close to 1 hp per ci

Turbo Buick 84-87
442 Olds - 84-87
Hurst Olds - 84

Have 8.5 rearends. Generally the Buick is 3.42 gear and the Olds is 3.73. Not all are posi. I have seen some wagons with 8.5 open rearends. I have also seen some cars that had an 8.5 installed during a warranty period when there was a rear diff issue.

Mexican production G-body cars seem to have a Dana rear.

Another Dana 44 G-body rear.

There are aftermarket 9 inch housings available that are direct bolt in like this Moser in my car:

No other rearend is a direct bolt in. The 8.5 requires a driveshaft to be 1 inch shorter.

You can cut down an 8.8 or 9 inch and fab it up.

Here is a video that walks you thru cutting down a 9 inch. Bear with it, it's worth it. There is a lot of intel.

Moser...I'm married so there is definitely a budget without being questioned lol... Those g-body rears are hard to find or non existing in Va the way it seems.. If I can fab up something without cutting axle housing I would try that. Repositioning trailing arms or shock brackets

You could put 8.5 28 spline axles and an aftermarket posi in your existing housing. They will take quite a bit of abuse.

I still have a previous project 87 Regal with a 455/TH400 with a 7.5 rearend. If you do not intend to use slicks they work fine.

If you can find a used posi and gears from a 93-02 Camaro or Firebird, then just buy replacement Turbo Regal/Grand National axles.

I should have a kit that allows you to bolt with some minor welding a 98+ zr2 S10 rear, 8.5 3.73 posi disk brake rear in a g body with stock control arms springs ect. Just need to get some corvette/firebird wheels with 7" backspace.
