Out of curiosity how rare of a wagon am I in possession of here? I have done some research and have found manufacturing numbers ranging from 60 to 600. The only thing I have found to be consistent is that all the 78 wagons were Canadian? Help me out guys I need some knowledge.

Any car guy/gal worth their salt knows that stick wagons in general are rare. Why does it matter unless you're gonna flip that "rare, barn find, survivor, blah, blah, blah.."?

One of 1654 in the US or 94 in Canada produced in 1978. The production numbers were based off of the RPO for the 4 speed on all Malibu models. I have never seen any numbers for any specific body style. I also have never seen any information stating that all 4 speed wagons were made in Canada. The numbers above were published in Super Chevy magazine back in the early 90's.

Thanks that is the info I was wondering about!

I’m aware it’s a rare car. The question was “how” rare. And I won’t be passing it off as a “barn find” or anything else as I’ll be keeping it.

There are probably a half dozen guys with 4 speed wagons on some of the Facebook groups such as Maliburacing and G body Malibu's. None of the 4 speed cars are very common but rarity doesn't seem to equate to value as they don't seem to really bring anymore money than comparable automatic Malibus in the same shape. At least that is what I have seen.

I only know of the 1654 to cover all of the models. Never saw anything that broke it down. Not sure what rare means anymore since all the parts are available to make any car a stick. I thought my 2door 78 was special 30 years ago with the stick, now stick cars are everywhere.

1654 was the number built in the US. There were and additional 94 built in Canada.

To echo some of the sentiment, rarity is high, but that’s only gonna let you know how hard it will be to find oem replacement parts. As far as conversation, the stick will speak for itself. Stick wagons are cool. It’s just unfortunate that they aren’t fast. It’s like a clean Z24 Cavalier with a stick vs one with an automatic in terms of “wow.”

My "first" car was an '88 Z24 with a stick, and now I drive an automatic wagon. Guess which one I would want back in 20 years?
