Ok so this will be my first sbc build. Plenty of other builds.
Have done my Olds a few times. So looking for best piston
to run. How big of a cam can i go without changing valve train
or am i better changing valve train ? Just got crank and block back
from machine shop. .030 over on block and crank is all good now.
suggestions please. going in my 82' elco. thank you in advance.

To many variables to make any recommendations without more info. Do you just want a nice cruiser or are you looking to run 11's at the track or something in between?

Looks like it will be a 355 if you keep the stock crank. Could have done a 383 with a balanced kit from Comp. Products for under $800. If its a 355 then a set of dished pistons for a 9.5-1 compression with a set of 64cc heads. A set of vortec heads 906 or 062s with the stock springs or a set of Z-28 and a Comp. EX-268 cam and lifters. This is a great set up with stock trans and converter. I would step up to at least a 3.42 gear set.

I like SRP pistons. For a 355, use a 2 valve relief flat top piston and a 64 range cc head. For a street small block, a 180-195 cc runner head is good. If you can swing it, a hydraulic roller is best, but without knowing some specifics it’s hard to say. But for mine with power brakes I used the lunati 60112 .535/.550 231/[email protected] hydraulic roller.

You guys are great. Also have helped me in the past. Thank you again. Sorry I had not provided enough variables. On a family budget first. Going in the 82’. Would love to be a daily fun street car. No racing in mind. Mostly cruise around and love a good sound to an engine. Not worried about 11 second car. Just want it to perform good. I have a 72 Cutlass supreme that I can do the fun stuff with. This elco has been used in a few gambler 500’s. Loads of fun with great people. Again thank you so much to all in this forum.

I've been using Northern Auto for 20 years, great people - You can't go wrong with their Master rebuild kit and they let you upgrade the parts you want.

If a crate engine is a option consider the 350/290 from GM it dyno,s at 308 hp. Super chevy did some bolt on,s and made 333 hp 370 tq that is all NEW from GM with 3yr / 50 k warranty ! If your going to go the build route theirs a few things to keep in mind. If your going with a auto trans dont over cam , theirs many articles on net to bring you up to speed on valve lift, duration , overlap. Second keep compression ratio 10;1 or a little under this will allow you to live on pump gas without any octane booster or having to retard your timing . Third if your willing to shop around a little theirs great deals on used parts for SBC on craigs list / facebook market place !
