I have been thinking during the winter to switch out the 3.08 gears for something taller in the range of 2.92 but they don't seem to exist. The tallest gear I can find for a Chevy 8.2 is the 3.08 which doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone have any info on the taller gears for an 8.2?

Thanks

Guessing it is probably similar to the 7.5" in that there are gear "series". I believe 2.14 - 3.08 are series 2 and 3.23- up to at least 4.56 is series 3. These appear to agrew with that:

To use 3.42 gears in a 7.5" series 2 carrier I had to use a ring gear spacer. Didn't see one on summit for the 8.2" gears. Maybe they work without?

I do not want or like the 3.42 ratio. I am looking for something around 2.92 but they don't seem to exist for an 8.2

BOP 8.2s tended to be taller than Chevys. We had a Lemans rearend in my dad's '64 El Camino for a few years. It had 2.56s and limited slip. Also didn't use C-clips. Not sure if ring and pinions are interrchangable but they were all considered 8.2s.

I just did some quick poking around using 1966 as the year. Buick and Pontiac both list 2.93 and Olds show 2.78 as closest to what your looking for. Deeper digging might turn up better info.

the BOP and Chevy 8.2 are as different as the Olds 307 and the Chevy 307... no one knows why

Seems to be what I'm seeing too. Still as bolt in assembly if you can find one.

chevy 8.2 rear ends didn't offer a lot in freeway gears. i can only find info stating 2.56 and 2.73 ratios were available for the 8.2 axle.
most of these have been tossed in favor of more performance oriented ratios. chevy offered the 8.2 in the impala thru 1970, in the chenille thru 1971or 1972, and the nova thru 1972 possibly 1974.
