In June we ate a throttle plate bolt - I have the pics to prove it - lol. They are posted a couple of posts back.

Well, we are doing some freshening up and I found that bolt was on the other side of the motor (in #2 cylinder) before it found its home in #3. Pretty hard to believe, I wouldn’t believe it without seeing it first hand.

Engine bay cleanup in process. Some powder coating - much more to show when it's together :)

I haven't updated in a bit and I have to say that I've been living on Struggle St until earlier this week. We did some minor upgrades and cleaning and all was going pretty well. I had the heads off and noticed that I had a fair amount of scratches in the bore at the top 1/2" and mostly on the thrust side as expected. I didn't think much of it at first as it was relatively quiet and my compression testing was decent at 155 +/-2 across all 8 when cold. Little did I know that when I cleaned up the bores, the heads and the pistons that I made it into a rattly ****. Also, I put a set of bearings in it and didn't measure squat on the first go 'round due to the bearings weren't terrible other than a dime size size wear mark on the rods where the power hits the hardest. But I took out a set of standard ACL's and installed a set of standard Clevite's.

After firing it up in 30-40 degree whether it rattled enough to scare the hell out of me. I pulled the heads and clearanced the push rods some, still not happy pulled the motor and checked the bearings and found they were tight, and I mean alot tighter than the standard ACL's I took out. So after getting some X bearing's and sizing everything about 8 times over a week I put it in and just could not live with the rattle until it warmed up. I ran the pistons and block over to the local race shop and got a couple of frowns :( I spoke to JE, Mahle, Wiseco and everyone acted shocked that we have made it 15K on the asymmetrical pistons that are 1.5" tall this long at the current HP level.

So we had it bored with a new set of slugs. We went with another JE asymmetrical but with a teflon coated skirt that were .005 over putting it to 4.130". Of course they were 25 grams lighter which required a re-balance. I decided to have the rods checked and OF COURSE they needed to be resized and we upgraded the bolts to ARP 2000's due to the local guy was scared of the ARP 8740's at a higher level than we were at. So, another $1800 later after a winter plan of a couple hundred of engine upgrades we figured 'the best laid plans of mice and men' lol.

But it's running now - finally - and ready for a summer that ends with drag week. All seems well and my kid has new wheels and tires in the works. The bigger stall in the converter 2800 vs 2400 is a world of difference on the 2 step, along with the line lock, rear discs - it goes like hell and stops on a dime. I'll try to post up some vids if the weather holds up.
