Does anyone know what gears came in the 81 Malibu with the V8 from the factory? And is it a posi?

Also what is the width from hub to hub on a stock 10 bolt 7.5 ?

Depends on the engine, body style, and emissions system

Width is around 58.5 inches. Limited slip was available (though seldom ordered) in all configurations.

No 350s in 1981 in Maibu, 267 or 305 only for V8s

49 state Emissions:

Coupe/sedan with a 267 got 2.29, wagon with 267 got 2.56

Wagon with 305 got 2.41 with 2.73 "performance ratio" optional

California emissions:

Coupe/sedan with 305 got 2.29, with 2.73 "performance ratio" optional

Wagon with 305 got 2.41 with 2.73 "performance ratio" optional

No 267 in California, as I recall, it wouldn't pass emissions

Thanks fellas.. Sure don't want those dog gears. I might end up just saving up for a 9" complete assembly bolt on rear end.

I found a guy close that has an 87 Monte SS rear end. Has 3.73 gears. For 350 bucks. Is that reasonable and did the SS Monte's come with that gear ratio?

MCSS got 3.42 for 83/84 and 3.73 for 85+

It's still a 7.5 (7.625 actually) rear, probably less than a new ring and pinion plus setup, but it's still a 30+ year old used part. It is less than the few that have been advertised locally
