Question- the pump that is on it now is a leaker (10 years old) it has treaded 1/4 " bolts to hold it to the mounting plate- all the pumps now seem to be not threaded - how are you dealing with this- switch to a bolt & nut or???

understood, but what are you guys doing about the 4 1/4" bolts that mount the pump to the cover- the pumps used to have threaded holes for the bolts, now just a hole- are you using bolts & nuts to attach the pump?

They are NOT the main w/p bolts- they are the 4 bolts that hold the pump to the plate 2 at the top, 2 at the bottom they thread into the pump from the backside - only problem is the replacement pumps do not have threads - are you guys using bolts & nuts???

Problem solved I think -last person to do the pump had the small bolts going in from the backside essentially doing nothing- they went thru the timing cover (threaded) and then the water pump which is not threaded so doing nothing to hold the water pump.

Am I correct in that ALL bolts including the small bolts go in from the front??? Please show diagram or confirm that this is the case- don't want to do somthing dumb like running the bolts into the timing chain/ gear- (I'm reusing stock bolts)
the gm shop manual is pretty useless for a w/p job

All the bolts go from the front through the pump and into the cover.

If some dope did what you are saying they did you better look over that engine real good!!!!

Who know what other stuff they screwed up.

Thanks, fortunatly the w/p was the only thing changed - engine never been opened - 1 family owner 70k miles
When I was in my 20's I thought it was fun to work on a car- now that I'm 70 not so much, While I had to get brackets out of the way, I noticed the fuel pump is hidden under the a/c compressor-
sometimes I wish it was a Chevy engine instead of the Olds.
thanks again for the help!!!

If the bolts where in backwards the timing cover was off and oilpan was off/lowered.

No other way for those bolts to get like that
