It's water pump time- last one was 10 years ago. If I remember correctly the "plate" that goes on the back of the wp had bolts to mount it to the pump.
All the water pumps avail now don't have that provision. Am I missing something???
For those of you that have changed pumps, how are you doing this???

Car is 83 olds cutlass supreme v8 y code engine with a/c

thank you...

What's a Y code? The "plate" on an Olds engine is the timing cover. Chevies don't have anything but the ports to the block.

Are you talking about the closed impeller?

Fun fact: when typing the phrase "Chevies don't have...", Android/Google says "feelings"

No. You may be thinking of some other kind of pump. 307 Olds V8 in the G-body era is either VIN Y or VIN 9 and use the same water pump regardless.

Bolts mount the pump to the timing cover.

No I distinctly remember a steel plate (1/8 '+_) that went on the water pump then the assembly went on the engine. It is a genuine olds engine y code v8- not a chevy. I can see it from the side with the pump still on. Car has been in family since new so not butchered. Drawing appears to be a diesel as there is an injection pump gear.?
Any other exploded views.? I have the factory gm 2 volume shop manuals and they are no help- thanks keep them coming, I'm trying to avoid getting it off & finding I need more parts

Water pump needed is GM p/n 556283 superseded to 12337519.

Or you can go to autozone, advance auto parts, NAPA, O'reilly, etc., and get the reman equivalent.

Back has no plate on it.

Pontiac's use a plate between the timing cover and pump but to the best of my knowledge Oldsmobile's never did.

Looking at it in the daylight, it looks like it's really the timing cover plate- I just remembered a plate from 10 years ago- thanks for the help!

What's a Y code?
In the G-body Olds lineup, and some other G-bodies, they had 307 engines between the A-arms. They had a VIN Y and a VIN 9 (H/O and 442) in the 8th digit of the VIN to designate the engine code. It was also used in some 86-90 Cadillacs with tow package.

It's similar deal like the VIN X for W-30 455 in 1972.
